Before the light starts flashing red, is there a yellow light that quickly flashes?

If so, you got the "YLOD" (Yellow light of death) meaning you'll have to get it repaired.

Try holding the power button when you turn it on until it beeps. It's a shot in the dark but it may help. Otherwise I would just buy a new one. I doubt you still have warranty on a 2008 machine. You can transfer all your data from the old PS3 to a new one.

Unless an industrial magnet has been run over the hard disk or it's in several pieces your data should be safe. If it's still in warranty (or if you have the PlayStation Care Plan), send it back to Sony and I'm sure they can transfer your data for you. If you're no longer in warranty then hold on to your console and take it to any computer specialist store and they can transfer it for you; the PS3 uses a standard HDD.

I don't know what kind of HDD the PS3 uses, but you could try a HDD reader (docking station? whatever). Basically, you connect the HDD to this artifact and then proceed to connect it to your computer through a USB cable. You would only have to figure out how to get the HDD out of the PS3, but that can't be too hard.

Take it from someone who has now has had the YLOD 2 times now...buy a new ps3. The repair (by sony, or ANYONE else) is only temporary (will die soon after 6 months after repair). It is more cost efficient to buy a new ps3. The average ps3 life span is around 2 or 3 years. Say, 2.5 years. A new ps3 now costs 250$. If you get yours repaired by sony, and it costs around 150$ CAD to fix it, only to break down again after 6 months...you'll pay 300 for a years worth of ps3 play-time (2repairs*6months=1yearofps3).

I have my new slim after my 60 gb ps3 had the ylod twice, and I'm super happy with it. Except for the lack of backwards compatibility and card slots, but that's not that big of a deal - even if you do care about that stuff.

UMMM YOU CAN'T GET YOUR OLD DATA BACK IF YOU HAD THE YLOD. If you tried everythign to fix it (like turning it on and off in specific ways), im sorry to say man, your data is gone. If you put your old hdd into the new ps3, it will ask to reformat it (sony did this for who knows what reason!). The only thing that will stay is your online profile on games if it was kept with that specific game's servers, and also your trophies if you've synched them. Good luck!

I would suggest you search on youtube on how to make the ylod consoles work for a period of time at least to transfer your data, because once you pull your hard drive out of the system you're done, even if you make the system work later and put it back, it will ask to format the HDD. Those HDD readers doesn't work, at least not with me. Your best bet is to make your broke system work and transfer the data with an ethernet cable.

To make your life easier, delete most of your stuff from the HDD like videos, downloadable games and game data (since you can download and install the games and game data any time), leave just the saved data. I'm saying this cause sometimes the transfer progress gets stuck or really slow if is too much data. I was once transferring 220GB from one PS3 to another, I reached the 57% mark with 5 hours (not bad), but then, 2 hours later I was still at the 57%, that's when I started searching online and found people with the same problem, there was one guy that was on his 9th day with 89% complete, but was moving about 1% a day, so when I read that I canceled my 220GB transfer right away and deleted almost everything, only left a couple of games and saved data (about 25GB of content), after that, the transfer only took 15 minutes.
