Damn a hate thread? Generally I don't hate games, but one that instantly comes to mind from last year is Resonance of Fate. Goddamn the dialogue in that game is ****. Never have I so badly wanted to return a game. Well, maybe for Star Ocean 4 too.
A list of games I think are simply above average, no where near their acclaimed status:
RDR: I had more fun with GTA4, and I didn't really think GTA4 was great either. John Marsten was the only good thing about the game.
ME2: And the whole ME universe really. I was laughing through some of the dialogue in the first game. Seconds a bit better. But colour me dissappointed at how little effect your choices from ME1 have in ME2. It's as if Bioware knew they were gonna port ME2, so they made the choices in ME1 not matter so much. And no a lot of subtle changes doesn't count for me. And on the subject of choice, most of it goes like 'brief background - shoot shoot shoot - BAM! make a decision - brief outcome'. Never does a decision 'really' effect stuff in-game. The ending maybe, but not in-game. Toss in a glossed over main story, companion missions that....how to say...basically never impressed nor posed any hard decision to gain loyalty (except for Zagreed, now that was a decision, for a boring arse character). I could go on, but at the end I feel ME2 pales in everyway to Dragon Age, except for visuals and cinematics. Bioware look to have finally gotten cinematics well done.
AC:B: I never liked Assassin's Creed. The first game was my first current gen game, and boy visually it seemed amazing. I knew I was in a new gaming age. Visually. I always hated the platforming and combat in the game, the stealth ability was the only reason I stayed. I never intended to get AC:B, or perhaps when it was dirt cheap. But I got it as a present, so I played it. Still same old problems, though some decent additions made the game tolerable from mid-end game. The first few hours were bad for me. As a sandbox game, I prefer it over RDR, since there were actual side-missions I would do. Overall though, RDR had the better atmosphere.
GOW3: Again, nothing really special. I liked the story, and loved some boss fights, but the rest just seemed average. Gameplay/combat was nothing special. Visuals, while great, were either mostly in the dark or indoors, making it a moot point. And then you backtrack through those environments. I dunno, I was expecting more.
Yes, I know those are quite a few AAA games from last year. Maybe I've just gotten too picky.
