so i know what allot of u are thinking, it doesn't exist, or never happens unless u put ur ps3 in an insulated box and let it cook itself.

but sadly, it did happen to me, in an open area with atleast a foot of clearance to open air in all directions with no vents obscured, its really sad since now my GH3 is stuck in there.

but luckily sony are pretty good, and i just had to make a quick call, and i'll be back on my feet in a few weeks, still a pisser though, so i thought i'd vent here...

Red light doesn't mean it is broken for PS3. That just means it overheated. (Shouldn't you just wait till it cools down?)

It turns yellow for PS3 if it broke.

Sorry to hear that. It happened to my dad's PS3, but it was because he didn't place it in an area with good ventilation.

Too bad, which model did you have?

I was just wondering, if someone returns a launch 60GB system - do they get the 80GB returned if Sony can't send a refurbished 60GB?

I would get very annoyed if I got a 40GB as replacement for the 60GB.

TO ALL:

In order for a light to be qualified as "xxx Light of Death", its product must carry an above 25% total failure rate. For further detail, see "xbox 360".

Please do not insult the PS3 with such vulgar terminology.

I'm not saying this is impossible or that it did not happen to you, but your profile speaks volumes about your cred. Why is it that one of your only posts is about a failing PS3? Have you posted once about anything on you PS3 experience? No.

Sorry, these "My console broke threads" drive me nuts. Its hard to judge who is really sincere.

I think they were referring to the TC. Don't fret man, it's not worth getting that upset over. :)

Edit: Nevermind, just checked, this is your second post. TC has many more posts... not that that necessarily makes him anymore credible ;) He also hasn't informed us of which model he had as was requested earlier. I'm also curious as to how the 60gb models are replaced.

u guys shouldnt be so hard on people. if his ps3 broke then it broke. i mean mine broke too. personally i think the ps3 is a piece of crap. all i did was glue 3 months worth of power bills over the vents. it must have got really hot because now nothing in my house works. any console that can make everything in ur house break just by doing that must be a real piece of crap ;)

Its amazing to me how many die hard sony fans just refuse to believe that this problem exists. IT DOES EXIST

It happened to me on saturday night. I called sony and they say its an overheating problem. Now i have to send it in and it will probly be a month before i see it again. This is the exact same thing as the xbox red ring. And my system is not a launch system or anything either its only like 6 months old.

To the people out there offering solutions please stop. Unless you know how to take the system apart and know exactly what causes the problem then please stop giving false solutions.

Sony tells you that you can try letting the system sit for a few days to cool down......This does not work and is insulting to me because how long can it actually take for the system to cool down????

There are people online who say they have let their systems sit for a month and still nothing.

Sony does not want to address this issue because it is not occuring enough, and when it does occur most people just take their ps3 back to the store and the broken system is written off as defective or whatever

I have a question for people who have gotten the red blinking light....... Did you play your system exessively? like 8 hours a day every day or even more? I did, and i know a couple people on my psn friends list who have had this same problem and they too use their systems ALOT,

I get the feeling that this would be happening to way more of the ps3 systems if people were playing them more

And another thing, if this happens to you, DO NOT TELL SONY THAT YOU HAVE AN INTERCOOLER, becuase intercoolers are not liscenced by sony and void all warrantys even if you purchased an extended one.

My theory on this red flashing light problem is that some signal gets crossed inside the system. Its a complicated system wich is probably why no one on the internet has come up with a real solution yet. I would go as far as to say that its something so simple that it probably takes sony techs about 5 minutes to fix. Something as simple as resetting a sensor or signal or something, but sony is probably the only ones who can do it.

The reason i say this is because if you have the red blinking light on your ps3, then listen to your system when you try to turn it on. You can hear something try to turn on and then a clicking noise as if it fails. Its not even on the same side of the system as the fan is either.

Another thing, if you have a disk stuck in the system, then if you turn the power switch in the back off, and then hold the eject buttom while you switch the disk back on, then the system will turn on for about 20 seconds, it spits the disk out, and the fan kicks on really loud and blows hard.

If the system overheated and the fan is broken or warped or whatever, then why does it turn on when you do this eject disk trick?

Sony is full of crap when they say its an overheating problem, they just dont want to tell the public that the real issue is over use of the system. They dont want to promote a product that costs $400 or more and say "yea its great but you can only use it so much before it dies"

On top of that, even though i did play my system alot of hours each week, it sat on a glass shelf by itself in an air conditioned room with plenty of space to breath. I also cleaned the dust off constantly and made sure not to push dust inside the machine.

Trust me its not an overheating problem, its an over-use problem and they will not admit theres faults in the system unless it became wide-spread like the xbox360. it will not become wide-spread because most people just play casually.

sorry for this long post but i just feel the need to say these things

People who will not believe this can happen are fools. Some people get outright angry at people saying the ps3 does this, and even go as far as to say that the videos on youtube are fake and that you can make your system do this if you want to.

some people have said the problem is that your using a power strip and that if you plug the system directly into a wall outlet that it will work again. that is false

some people say the hard drive gets dislodged and that taking it out and putting it back in will fix the problem, that is also false

Theres something inside the system wether its hardware or maybe a resistor on the motherboard that fails. One day someone will figure this out, just like the red ring on xbox 360 and it will be easy for us to fix on our own. BUt until then we are all basically the pioneers of this problem and we only have 2 choices, either send the system to sony (and pay $150 if you dont have the receipt) , or you can try to take the system apart and risk ruining it forever. either way this sucks badly

and by the way, sony is really nickel and diming us with this $150 charge if you have no reciept. i asked them why they do this and they said it was to prevent them from fixing systems that had been stolen. I then told the sony rep, "so its ok if its stolen as long as we pay $150 right?" and the only thing he could say to that was that the warranty states you must have the receipt.

xbox had major problems but atleast they took care of their customers.

and one last thing, if you want to avoid the $150 charge then do what i did. i told them i had the reciept, and all they ask for is a photo copy. I then went and got a reciept from a friend of mine, who happened to pay cash for his system wich was even better. i put the image on my computer and replaced his serial number with mine on the reciept. F u Sony!

1.) why did you revive such an old topic

2.) if you dont have a receipt that is what you get with almost all products

3.) the ps3 does not have a high number of hardware issues

4.) your rant goes on for way to long get over it your system broke YOU dont have the receipt so pay the 150$ and shut up

I know, its kinda annoying, people cannot just simply say "my ps3 broke" they really have to think of a catchy name to call it like twinkling twinkling light of death or anything with light of death and sumtimes they would even abbreviate it to make more catchy

Yeah, I get that blinking "red light of death" all the time. It's called powering down your system.
