So, My TV supports 480,720,and 1080i. Which means that since my TV doesnt support 1080p, that means that it will down scale to 480i and not downscale to 720 or 1080i?

I watch my Blue Ray movies at 1080i, but for some reason I can't get them to play at 720p. If your TV supports 1080i you should be fine.

It supports 1080i also and might also start to support 720p via firmware update.

If your TV supports 1080i, that's what it will scale to.

Isn't that only true if it's natively 1080i though?

Woah..wait a minute.  So, the PS3 doesn't have 720p yet?  I usually prefer that over 1080i (my TV is not 1080p capable.)

It plays games in 720p no problem. They're talking about Blue-Ray movie playback.

It doesn't scale the bluray movies to 720p but they play in 1080i and the new movies look awesome, Open season is a must have to show how good bluray looks.

So far on the PS3, Blu-Ray movies play in 480p, 1080i, and 1080p.

To those with native 720p TVs: Most native 720p TVs have come with a chip that can scale to 1080i. If you have an older HDTV check your instruction manual.

Any tv that supports 1080i should be fine, even if it is a 720p tv.

A 720p tv should be able to convert 1080i down to 720p, and usually look just as good as if you picked 720p to begin with. Actually, most tvs are 768p and the usual thing to do is use 1080i because 1080i deinterlaced and downscaled to 768p is higher resolution than 720p upscaled to 768p, you get more detail with 1080i.

Keep in mind too the PS3 has to convert the Blu-ray 1080p24 video to 1080i60 first, then to 1080p if you picked that for output, so the 1080i signal from the PS3 for Blu-ray is no less quality than 1080p output, and most 1080p tvs that are good will do that last step to convert 1080i60 to 1080p for you.

Well, not all 1080p tvs have a VGA input for 1080p playback from the 360, but I think anyone would like to know 1080i from Component on the 360 HD-DVD is basically near the same on a 1080p tv.

Lets say you have a 768p tv (1366*768 ). For a movie, 1080i60 has more detail than 720p. If you give a 768p screen 720p , it has to upscale to 768p, as 720p is lower than 768p3. But with 1080i, that's much higher resolution than 768p, so it has to downscale it, thus you maintain full detail 768p can show compared to just giving it lower 720p.

The way MPEG works the software the PS3 uses to decode it (which interfaces with the cell) can be made to drop the res of the output easily, its just a matter of them getting round to it. With the Euro launch on their plate they're trying to get the primary gaming functions fixed first but its early days yet, changes are coming.

I'm not good with all these numbers, but basicall if you have an HDTV with a 720P res. than does that mean that you are screwed watching blu ray movies then? I just purchased a PS3, hoping to watch blu ray movies but my tv only supports up to 720P.

For Bluray movies set your PS3 to 1080i,  your TV will scale it to 720p not the PS3.
I even have my Xbox 360 set to 1080i when i watch movies,   i let the TV do the scaling even tho the Xbox 360 could do the scaling if i wanted.

Here is a picture of King Kong with the Xbox 360 set to 1080i even tho the native resolution of my TV is 720p.

Agree and disagree :) Don't set your PS3 to output 1080i only -- if you don't have a 1080p tv set your PS3 to output 1080i and 720p. It will then automatically choose the format that is native for the movie / game or in the case of blue-ray only available choice (since you didn't select 1080p). A lot of people doesn't want to know how it works / can't follow the above discussion so just set the PS3 to 1080i and 720p and then let the tv do the rest

I watch my Blue Ray movies at 1080i, but for some reason I can't get them to play at 720p. If your TV supports 1080i you should be fine.

gruoch1

- yeah i noticed the same thing...the only resolve i can figure out is to disable the 1080i (via system display) because the ps3 reads it as the highest avail. resolution?...if you want or prefer 720p simply uncheck the 1080i and the ps3 will display it at the 720p resolution.

- i actually did this but the 1080i looked better so i switched it back!
- but on my 360 i have it set to 720p and it looks great to me so i leave there...maybe later this year or early next year i'll get a 1080p LCD as the prices are slowly but surely coming down!

Umm No!  You never want to uncheck 1080i for Bluray movies if you have a 720p/1080i HDTV.  If you uncheck 1080i the movie will be played in 480p.  That's why you noticed the difference when you unchecked 1080i.

Yes this is true. If you have a 720p set you need to leave the highest res set at 1080i or you bluray movies will be in 480 and they don't look goo at all that way.

Do I need to use HDMI to view movies on my PS3 or can I use component cables instead and still get HD? I have an older Panasonic HDTV and it only supports 720P and doesn't have HDMI.

Thanks m3Boarder! I thought I wasn't going to be able to get HD out of my Ps3 with only component cables and using 720P. My friend worried me cause he said that if you bought a HDTV and it doesn’t have a HDMI or DVI port, then you are screwed because you will not be getting HDTV signals out of your ps3---was that even true?

I guess if that was true then no one was getting HD out of HD TVs until the last 2 years when they have been around much longer. Component and VGA both do HD.

If you have a 720p tv it must be able to accept 1080i, just about all of them do. The PS3 will not output Blu-ray movies at 720p, only 1080i and 1080p. Component or HDMI will work. Are you sure your tv does not accept 1080i, I mean I know it won't display at 1080i, but again most if not all 720p tvs convert 1080i to 720p.

Only thing you might need HDMI for is somewhere in 2011 when the movie studios decide to activate ICT (image constrain token) on new movies. This means the movie will only play in HD through HDMI or DVI that accepts HDCP (High Definition Copyright Protection). Otherwise, ICT movies will be lowered to 480p-540p over analog component.
