I have just got a PS3 today and think its great but I seem to be getting a bad picture when playing a blue ray film. I have my PS3 conected via a HDMI lead to a HD TV. The games look incredible on it but when i put in a blu ray film it seems to have a haze and doesnt look much better that a standard DVD. The back of the BD box sez its 1080p and my TV only goes to 1080i. could this be a problem? the film is Terminator 2. thanks for your help.

There is various PQ when talking about BR discs. I'd take a look at better quality discs and then pass judgement. BTW, I believe the T2 disc was redone like the Fifth Element disc because of all the complaints about the bad PQ...I've got T2 and it looks great!

i kinda have a problem too. last night i got 300 for blue-ray, and i just put it in to see how it looked, but its very grainy, and honestly didnt look too great. granted i only watched the first 5 minutes or so, but does anyone know what the problem might be? my other blue ray movies are a little grainy looking, but this one seems a little more so.

Honestly 300 is suppose to look grainy but as for T2 I have no clue on that one. It seems that old movies converted to blu-ray suck. But recent films in the last 3+ years are great like Superman, Deja Vu, The Patriot all look great. Stargate looked average but that move came out in like 1997 or so I think.

Like everybody said the T2 Bluray sucks. Pirates of the Caribbean 1&2 are the best looking Bluray easily.

Here's a good list of all Blu-Ray movied in tier curtsy of Avsforum.

Blu-ray Tier

Old movies can still be convert nicely to Blu-Ray version as most films are recorded in much better resolution then 1080p. It just depends on how much effort the studio house is willing to put in for conversion. Disney right now is the top studio for blu-ray releases.

Make sure your TV and HDMI cord is HDCP or whatever it is callled, It is that copy protection certification and if the TV or cables are not certified they do not output at HD resolutions.

you don't need to worry about cotent protection enforcemnet right now unless ur using a PC. content protection will not come into effect until 2010.

You cannot watch or play 1080p content on a PS3 unless you have an HDCP compatible TV.

Here is a tip to take with you when shopping for blu ray movies. DONT BUY 10 YEAR OLD MOVIES ON BLU RAY. These movies were not taken with Hi def cameras and the end product was not meant to be scrutinized in HD. Its quality was based on the idea that VHS or DVDs limitions would hide its flaws.

Look into getting more recent films like Casino Royale, Pirates, Prestige, etc. Dont go back into 90s action films on blu ray and expect miracles.
