Is this an issue? I'm thinking about getting the ps3, but i feel as though i dont have the tools to work this finely tuned machine. Ps3 seems to be asking for more cash just to have the right set up.. please tell me how the ps3 will look on standard tv. Thanks much appreciated

It looks great on SD sets.  It looks even better on HD sets.  You're fine running on a standard def tube.

I got a SD TV and it looks great, it will look even better on a HDTV but its not necessary, you will notice a lot of difference between the PS2 and PS3 on a SDTV.

I currently have my PS3 connected to my Sony 32 inch Trinitron (it's fullscreen) and I also have a Samsung 32 inch 720p LCD HDTV with 2 HDMI slots (it's widescreen). I tried my copy of Talladega Nights on my SDTV and it looked awesome, however when I tried my copy of Talladega Nights on my HDTV using HDMI cables no less, it didn't look so great, not nearly as good as it looked on my SDTV. How come???

Bad transfer / source material.  Many of the first Blu-ray movies released were from lower quality source material, meaning the film wasn't shot with HD in mind.  Pickup something like Ice Age 2 which has perfect source material being that's it's generated and doesn't suffer from film grain.  You'll see a huge difference.

The other day I watched The X-Files: Fight the Future (great movie by the way) on my SDTV using my PS3 with the standard cables that come with the system, but the quality was terrible. It looked really dark as if it were a pirated movie.

Just hang with the packed in composites.  You'll be fine with that if you're tight on cash.

Just so you know--blu ray on an SDTV will look no different than a DVD.  I am talking about movies.

As far as games--the games look decent on an SDTV, but mind blowing on an HDTV.  My advice, save those pennies for an HDTV.

The ps3 will downscale blu-ray "movies" to 480p if 720p is selected in the ps3, but if you choose 1080i, the movie (blu-ray, not DVD) will be played at 1080i. Hope that helps.

you must be doing something wrong... make sure that when you hooked the PS3 to the HDTV that you selected the video out settings to 720p

just to let everyone know... HD compared to SD is like comparing night and day, THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE... it all depends on what you are used to, if you have never really interacted with an HDTV then your mindset is that a SDTV is fine... until you witness both, you will see the drastic difference

Sadly many people do not know that blu-ray or HD-DVD for that matter will look identical to DVD on an SDTV.  You have to have a tv that has the ability to show you all of those extra pixels to see the higher resolution--Hence the need to have an HDTV to see the higher resolution.

Bottom line--if you don't plan on buying an HDTV within the next few years then you should just buy DVD's as you will never see the greater picture quality that blu-ray has to offer--resulting in throwing money away when you could have bought the DVD for much less.

This is true!  Believe the HD hype and when you view an HD-DVD or Blu-ray hooked up to an HDTV--you will be blown away.

I used to be one of those people that thought blu-ray and HD-DVD would fail and DVD's would remain king of the hill, because of all of the early articles stating that the picture quality of blu-ray when compared to a DVD being played in an upscaling DVD player is minimal at best.  Those initial comments are dead wrong--blu-ray blows DVD out of the water when watching on an HDTV.  The difference is worth paying an extra 10 bucks for (per movie)--assuming you have an HDTV to watch it on.

do you own a 360? well if so then your getting pretty much the same deal on a SDTV as that system.

So true, I tried a PS 3 for almost a month on an SD at it looked gorgeus, though on an HDTV will look even better. Just like a 360. Its cool on SD but cooler in HD

blue ray movies on a standard def  look exactly like dvds. but ps3 games look much better than ps2 games due to much better geometry and effects.
