I don't know if this is the proper place for this but I need to vent. On Monday my PS3 stopped reading blu-ray movies and games. It only plays PS2 games and that sucks. It is also past the warranty so I'm stuck with the bill.

After some studying I have concluded that the blu-ray lens/laser is fried. I opened my PS3 up myself and found it to very easy to work on. I have ordered the replacement part for it and should have it some time next week. I was shocked on how simple the blu-ray drive is to open by itself and how easy it is to get the defective part out which is part number KES-400A if anyone cares. I took the drive apart, cleaned it and reassembled the piece. To make sure I didn't kill my drive, I played Burnout for about 10 minutes before it locked up and gave the infamous error code, which I don't recall what the numbers are off the top of my head. Afterwards I slipped a PS2 game in played for hours. Doing it myself if successful will save me at least $100. KES-400A runs for about $40 plus $10 shipping.

Hopefully I will have my PS3 up and playing PS3 games by next week. Wish me luck.

Good luck man. If you're successful let us know how you did it. For those of us who're tech saavy enough, anyway. I'm not, I'm just curious.

Youtube helped a lot with the disassemble/reassemble part.

I'll get back to you guys next week. When complete, I will try to explain it so people can understand. It's only a lot of screws. The wire harnesses are so simple to detach, no soldering required to reattach.:D

The warranty is one year but it is simple to fix, if this is the problem and I'm almost positive it is. We will see in about 2 weeks not one. The part is coming from China so I assume it will take about 2 weeks to get here. I was being optimistic when I said one week.

CameosisJ

I get two codes, one for PS3 games and one for Blu-ray movies. They are slightly different codes that I can't remember off the top of my head. I'm at work and the codes are written down at home. Both codes point to the blu-ray lens/laser failing from my research. I have a feeling you will be hearing this problem a lot from people who have the 60gb SKU which I have, as time passes. It sounds like a launch console bug that has been fixed for the most part on the 40 and 80gb units which lens unit on those models look a lot different with a different part number.

Not really. My hand has been forced. I don't feel like shipping my console out and paying $150+ for repairs when the fix appears to be so simple. Go to Youtube and search PS3 Blu-ray replacement for a helpful video on disassemble/reassemble to how easy it truly is.
