I recently got a PS3 (UK) and i have a HDTV but my TV only supports 720p and 1080i and when i look at Blu-Ray movies it says things like 'best picture in 1080p" and i was wondering if i could actualy watch those films on my HDTV with HD qualitly or will it just be realy reduced OR can i just not watch them at all ?

thanks

your t.v. only supports 720p or 1080i so you must watch it in either of the two. unless your t.v. is capable of 1080p then you are out of luck.  i have the same problem.  i found that for video games you should look on the back of the game case to see what setting to use.  for movies 1080i always looks better.  according to me my g/f and all my freinds.

Blu-Ray movies won't show in 720p (yet one more thing to fix) so with that tv you will have to go with 1080i. The picture quality is about the same between the two, i think.

my blue ray movies can be shown in 720p.  as long as the t.v. can support progressive scan (usually the newer types) it should be no problem.  if it can go to 1080p it can go to 720p.  mine does it and my cousins too.

Hmm- i know my tv does both 720p and 1080i yet i was sure i tried a movie before at 720p and it downscaled to 480p. may have to do some video output tweaking and give it another shot.

do you watch them on your ps3? and if you do, are you sure the ps3 is outputting 720p (as in you check the signal your tv is receiving with the 'info' button or whatever your tv has)? because while blu-ray movies will play fine at 720p on a stand-alone blu-ray player, everything i've heard indicates that the ps3 cannot scale blu-ray movies to 720p. i'm just wondering because my parents were actually talking about buying a ps3 as a blu-ray player (primarily), but their tv is 720p. i could be confused about the issue, but that was my understanding of the situation.

it shows 720p on the bottom of the screen when i watch it.  my friends t.v. doesn't support it so when he tries, his t.v. turns fuzzy and the ps3 shows it downscaling to 480i.  mine goes right to 720p.  i have spent some time watching the difference in clarity between 1080i and 720p.  progressive scan doesn't look better at all.

eh, i can tell a difference between 1080i and 720p... the progressive image generally looks slightly sharper, and sometimes i can see the interlaced lines in 1080i, so it does matter. it's not a huge difference, but a difference notable enough to affect purchasing decisions. so what is this scaling problem with 720p and blu-ray on the ps3 that everyone is talking about? so in your experience, the ps3 has no problem outputting a 720p signal with blu-ray movies and games? i must have misunderstood all the commotion...

Hmm...good question.

My TV also supports just 720p and 1080i (no 1080p...grrrrr).

I'll definitely give it a try and see if there's a difference. I believe I have my PS3 set to 1080i right now and movies like The Departed look amazing!

My HDTV is 23 inches screen. 1080p would be pointless for me. 1080i and720p are just fine for me. My PS3 looks much better in 720p anyway.

To the guy saying he watches blu-ray movies in 720p: Are you sure? I have a 32 inch lcd HDTV, and when I set my PS3 to 720p and then put in a blu-ray movie, it automatically downscales it to 480p. It will only allow it to be viewed in 1080i. Not true for games though.

Also you are like the only person Ive ever seen on here that says blu-ray can play in 720p. What kind of TV do you have? Id sure like to play the movies in 720p, they seem awefully grainy in 1080i. Thought it was my HDMI cable but bought a new one and the  blu-ray movies still loook bad at that resolution.

yeah that's what i was thinking, everyone else who tries to play blu-ray movies in 720p end up with them downscaled to 480p. all other blu-ray players can scale properly, and the ps3 supposedly has a scaler chip in it, or at least is capable of software scaling, so why doesn't sony enable/implement scaling? kinda crappy... as for grain, 1080i shouldn't really affect film grain in the image, as that is present on the original film source. films like full metal jacket are full of grain (as well as a couple problems with the transfer), while something like the departed or the prestige have very little if any film grain visible. unless you mean digital noise or the dancing pixels, etc., which is actually a problem with some transfers.

i am curious too...and after reading all the posts here....i think this question has yet to be answered....if we've got a tv's native res at 720p...playing bluray on a 720p res (which most have said can be done) will that still display the film in HD quality or will be no different than viewing a dvd? thanka agin...it is for this reason i have not made any blu ray purchases.

The Fugitive also has grain.

Yea i tried in 720p and it didnt work.  Which is better to play games in 720p or 1080i?  I always thought there wasnt much of a difference.  I know what they mean but when i compare they seem the same.
