The PS3 is one of the best Blu-ray players out there, but is not THE best as some people might have you believe. It's major plus is that it has firmware updates.

It's good. I like it. You really need HDMI to take advantage of it.

With the latest firmware update the PS3 is one of the best if not the best Blu-Ray player. And the nice thing is with future firmware updates it can stay up-to-date fairly easy.

The PS3 is great blu-ray player because it can be updated through the internet. However, when the system plays a blu-ray the fan kicks in and gets kind of loud. You could always crank the volume but I think a stand alone player might be quieter. I would still recommend getting the PS3 as your blu-ray player though, as it has been described as "Future Proof"

PS3 = Arguably the best Blu-Ray player.

Since the PS3 is the only player out now which will have support for the final profiles for Blu-Ray movies, theres really no point in getting a standalone. Blu-Ray movies plays just as well on the PS3 and a standalone.

Not sure if the specs for bluray are finalized yet (don't think so) but it is definately a part of the specs that they should have memory and internet access so they can be updated - ie all that meets that part should allow final profiles for bluray movies. With that said the PS3 have the possibility to be updated to a greater extent when it comes to major changes in regards to sound etc....

like that C-Net article said (don't have source so don't ask), the PS3 is practically the only future-proof blu-ray player. By that, it means that it won't be outdated because it has constant firmware updates.

For fast forwarding, you have the option of playing at x1.5, x10, x30, and x120. 1.5x is kinda neat, because you can actually watch the movie like that. The audio still plays and everything. It's just slightly sped up, and everyone sounds like chipmunks. If you don't get the blu-ray remote, and just use the ps3 controller, controlling forward and back is a simple matter of pressing right or left on the d-pad or left stick, with chapter skips mapped to the l1/r1 buttons.

And also, the remote (if you purchase one) is bluetooth. so it doesnt matter if you have it pointing at the maching or just within 30 feet (typical bt range)

You also have frame by frame with slow motion. Pause the film and IIRC it's the L2/R2 buttons on the controller. Trinagle brings up the control menu onscreen and square button brings up on screen menus for those movies that have it.

Blu-Ray is up to spec 2.0, which I think calls for an ethernet port, but you need to check wich version the stand0-alone was build to when you consider buying one - there are 3 out there, versions 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 IIRC. The PS3 is one of the best because it comes with ethernet ports and Sony is pretty good at updating it's blu-ray playback functions inline with stand-alone players. It's also good quality with a very low failure rate. I've used mine to watch blu-rays and DVDs nearly every day since launch - still shines. It also upscales DVDs and plays music CDs btw.

With exception of audio codec support, it is the best in every other capacity. If you don't have a highend surround sound system capable of TrueHD or DTSHD-MA then the PS3 is the best player for you. It has the fastest load times, is the only currently available player that can be updated to Profile 2.0 and is one of only 3 able to do Profile 1.1. I guess the whole infrared remote thing might be important to some people as well, but I consider it a non-issue.
