I'm looking to buy a PS3 in anticipation of some upcoming games due out later this year. I thought I would take advantage of the $100 price drop on the 60GB version of the game. From what I have read the 60GB has the emotion engine which allows better backwards compatability and the 80GB does not have it. So for $100 less I get 20GB less hard drive space but full backwards compatability (which the XBox 360 does NOT have). Unfortunately, I just read a post that said the PS2 backward compatability on the 60GB is far from perfect. *sigh*

So two questions for you guys.

Question 1: How good/bad is the backwards compatability of PS2 games on the 60GB version of the PS3? I still have God of War 2 that I want to play and I have been saving it for my PS3.

Question 2: Is there any other difference that the 80GB version has over the 60GB version other than a larger hard drive? (Please don't free video game, I'm just looking at the console).

Thanks!

Get the 60GB, it's got that backwards compatibility, and if you need more space, you can always buy an external harddrive like for a laptop, for the price difference of the two consoles. So you'll get even more space, backwards compatibility, for the price of only 80GB (opposed to 160 roughly) and no backwards compatibility.

So the 80GB really only has 20GB more to offer and a free game. For $100 more, that sounds like a bit of a rip off, even with the free game. Is there an extra controller with it?

Get the 60 GB. 20GB, a game, and backwards compatibility that they screwed up definately isn't worth $100. If you want the extra gigs just buy a new one, buy motorstorm if you want it, and don't worry about having to update your system just to play old games. I hate my 360 in that matter. The best Xbox game I can play is NBA Live 2004!

That person was a troll then, because the 60/20 GB models are 98% backwards compatible.

Anyway, the emulation is going to turn out just fine. Right now it's 75% backwards compatible. You will most likely be able to play all of your games, unless you have some really obscure title in your library. Also, this percentage will increase greately through firmware updates.

So, I voted, "just get a PS3". It really depends on whether or not Motorstorm and 20 extra GB are worth $100 to you. If Motorstorm isn't that important to you, but you want a larger HDD, you can just buy a 60 GB and buy a 160 GB HDD for $100. Comes out to the same price.

60GB just because it's cheaper all in all. 20gb + game is not worth 100 bucks imo not when you're loosing a chip that you can never replace. Though software emulation works great I suppose, in the long run it doesn't really matter I recon. However, there is no guarantee that software emulation gonna get as good backwards compatibilty like the EE chip.

So if you have a bunch of PS2 games you think you might want to play here and there, I say you get a 60gb (that's what I voted anyway)

I just got a 60GB on Friday and I love it. Every PS2 and PS1 game I've tried on it worked. Get a 60GB, Motorstorm and 20GB's are not worth $100.

1) The 60gb is actually very good. 98% of all ps2 titles work on it, so i don't you'll have problem, especially with a sony studio title like god of war 2. The 80 gig uses software emulation for bc and hence will only have like 80-90% bc. In this sense its a lot better to get the 60gb.

2) Nope, except for the lack of the emotion engine, nothing else. Another reason why it's best to save some money and get the 60gb.

Hope I could help nd hope you purchase a ps3 soon!

The EE chip will always be a better option due to the fact that it was pulled directly from the PS2, so the capatibility issue is of a less concern. Software emulation for backwards capatibility will lack in some areas, but really, how many PS2 titles will you play regularly? I didn't think I would have an issue playing a older game, but I really love the next graphics and going back to play a previous gen title doesn't appeal as much as I thought.

Unless you're interested in Motorstorm, I suggest getting the 60GB. Since the 80GB is only 20GB more, by buying the 60GB you save some money you can use to buy a bigger hard drive and upgrade your PS3.

60gb PS3 for $499 is an excellent deal.
- and the BC is 98% -- the 2% which dosn't work is obsure games / games which require periphals ( like Guitar hero ) ...

80gb PS3 for $599 with Motorstorm pack in is reasonable.
- the BC here is at 88%+ , i have a 60gb PAL PS3 and therefore have the same BC as the 80gb US PS3 ... and yet i have had 0 problems with BC - 0 ..

In the end decide - do you want the game Motorstorm ... if yes its a matter of - is 20gb extra HDD space worth $40 ? ... if no get the 60gb ...
