If S-Video is all you have then I still recommend buying the S-Video cable because there is a noticeable improvement over composite cables. Every bit helps even though it isn't HD. Here is a good one from Monoprice.

Then that's the best way to go. You'll get the best picture from the component video input. That's the Red, Green and Blue inputs. I'm just making sure that we're on the same page.

You'll get more details and a cleaner picture. You'll notice the difference.

Correct me if I'm wrong but S-Video even though its a bit crisper then composite is still 480i. Component even on a CRT should be 480p aka Progressive Scan. That jump up in image quality alone makes component worth it.

Isn't it 480p for S-Video and up to 1080i for component?

Component can go up to 1080i but that would be on an a Hi-Def set, he's asking about the picture quality on a CRT TV which is just a standard def set. Newer ones have component cable outlets in addition to the regular composite. This allows them to go up from 480i to 480p but its still standard def it cant go any higher.

Another thing to add is just get the official Sony component cables because they tend to work better and they cost about the same as any other brands. I have seen some third party cables that cost more than the Sony component cables (Monster cable is one of them).
