I have cable internet, but sometimes I do notice that my bars are not all the way up. Like they are supposed to be I wonder why I use a cat 5 cable. Hmm any suggestions
Well, I want five bars and I will do anything to get it including hooking my modem directly up to my ps3. That should be the best.samurai210
The max is 4, but yeah - I want 5 bars too. Maybe I could get in the room so fast, and kill everyone before they see me.
hojo80 , thats news to me.
I leave games alot except at those where i get a yellow connection at , wich is by far the best ive gotten in a non private game.
Alot of my friends explain that the distance between me and the host is the problem , now im confused.
I have a mission getting games with a green ping, only because I can only get a good connection to New Zealand and Australia since I live in New Zealand.
I wish they had a proper damn server browser thing like most games I've played online do, either that or add some code to the match making system that pings the host before you join and only joins you if the ping is below a curtain threshold.
It's not anybody connections' fault! It's IW servers, they are using P2P instead of dedicated servers! Plus, there is a bug that is going to be fixed in the upcoming patch which is related to the bad lag too!

completely true, i dont lag on any sony game, because they all use dedicated servers, but COD4 is a $h!t570rM
actually COD4 on the 360 and PS3 both use client hosted servers. Its a misconception

Sorry guys, I think this is one of those times where people have different definitions of "dedicated" and "peer to peer".
We do not have dedicated, hosted, no-client servers on PS3 or 360. The PC game comes with a dedicated server executable for people to run if they want to set up a dedicated server, but the console game does not.
We choose the best host from the people in the match lobby, based on a ton of factors including bandwidth and everyone's ping to the host (it's got no relation to who was first in the lobby or anything like that.) Then that host serves as the server for that match. It's not "peer to peer" in the sense that clients don't run their own part of the server and send that gamestate around to each other over the net (which is what I personally think of when I hear "peer to peer".) But it's also not "dedicated" in the sense that most folks think of it.
If it helps, think of it as being similar to a "listen server" in a typical PC MP game, except the game chooses who'll run the server per match based on how good it thinks you'd be as a host.
The 360 and the PS3 are identical in this respect

regardless, the servers still suck. i don't lag on RFOM, Motorstorm, Warhawk, Burnout Paradise, or Rockband but COD4 is just pathetic, almost unplayable online for me.

When I'm the host I'm always the host from the start, even if everyone who joins has a bad ping (which usually results in the connection being time out) it never changes who the host is, so I don't believe that even works at all.
Add lots of locals to your friends list. I always look out for the (AUS) tag when playing and add them to my friends list. That way you can add other Aussies and play with them. It is the best solution to this problem. If you of another Aussie or NZ are the host then you will get a green connection.
Always check your conection when the game starts (select). If its red then quit, try again. This game is too frustraing to play other wise. 3 bars yellow isnt too bad either.
Im from the UK and Ive always got a full green connection even if I play americans which I prefer instead of playing europeans.
I have a 8Mb DSL connection or there abouts and never have a problem really.

I use AT&T DSL, and it's one of the slowest speeds they provide (one level below Elite), but I've always got 4 bars, and have never had any problems with lag at all. My only issues regard losing connection in the middle of a match, which has probably happened to me three or four times during the 12 hours I've played online. I've been playing a lot with a buddy a few blocks away (downtown Chicago), and both of us have had completely lag free experiences.
I'm not saying this isn't a legitimate problem, I'm just surprised I have not run into it personally. From the posts on this board, the problem seems fairly pervasive. Is it a non-North American issue maybe?
No game on the PS3 or 360 uses P2P. They all use client server like everything else which puts the problems with data transfer in the hands of players, especially if they're stupid enough to use wifi. It's not anybody connections' fault! It's IW servers, they are using P2P instead of dedicated servers! Plus, there is a bug that is going to be fixed in the upcoming patch which is related to the bad lag too!

Ok, I understand but if there were five bars I would want them. Anyway I have four now with cable directly connected by a 45ft cat5e cable "OH YEAH". I must have a good connection because I am the host in a lot of games. But some people lag and they do it on purpose. Running with a skorpion and a silencer you can't afford to miss because of the small clip which is why lag sucks for me.
What is this bug -- how do you know of it, that it will be patched -- and can you tell/do you know when it will be patched?
In other words, I'm so frustrated with the bad game play experience due to the horrible lagging that I'd just as soon quit playing until the problem is fixed.
TIA.
What is wrong with this game, there is a 1 second lag for everything. I would charge up to a guy who is not looking at me go to knife him, and guess what I die. turns out he was shooting at me when I was running at him. I don't know how many times I am killed because of stupid lag. Sometimes I shoot at a guy who is looking at me and he never fires back until I get closer and I die. Then on the killcam it shows that I didn't even shoot what is up with that?samurai210
yeah dude i never have problems like that... yeah check your internet connection..
Perhaps COD4 is on its last set of legs? Haze, GTAIV, and MGS4 are all coming out within the next 3 months so COD4 will be gone but not forgotten.
I had some lag from the game last night. I was ready to knife a guy and it skipped to which I found myself looking at a wall and died from another player on his team. My k/d rate has went down a couple of points too.
