So I had to call Playstation service today here in Sweden, Europe.

I heard many had problems with their fans in their Playstations. I ran to mine to listen if it was the same with mine. And sad enough it is.

For those who are not aware of this problem: The fan on the PS3 has 3 settings and after a few minutes the fan goes to the highest without me doing anything. And it wont go down! I waited for 5 hours but nothing.

Anyway.. When I called them and told them about this they said something like this:

"Many have called here with the same problem so we called up Sony but all they said was that this is not a problem(?) and they havent said anything more to us. So all you can do now is wait until Sony recognizes this and say something about what they will do. But dont worry your system wont break down because of it so you can play as much as you want. "

So when will Sony say anything about it? It kind of annoys me when I watch a movie and the fan is spinning like crazy.

I want this problem fixed :(

Well yeah as far as I know they all do that, but at different times for some reason. But anyway it's not a problem with the console, it just runs a high fan to keep everything cooled off. It's loud so people think it's bad.

yes the fan should go down to step 1 again after a while and make no sound. But it stays at 3 until I turn off the console and start it again. Then it stays at 1 for 10 minutes but goes up again.

Is the PS3 well ventilated? That might be the problem. Tips would be to not keep it in a confined shelf and to not keep it on the carpet.

I think mine is one of those.:( It lasts 20 to 30 minutes silent and then the fan starts working on level 3, never stepping down until i turn it off. I e-mailed Sony and i'm still waiting for an answer.

This seems to be a general problem with European PS3s, a lot of people have this problem.

My fan is going to stage 3 only when I run folding at home personally, and once it's up to this it takes a hell of a time to go down, not like I really mind though I'm pretty far from the system

I'm guessing that's the problem cuz I've never had a problem with mine... runs quiet as the breeze.

dnt put any console on the floor that is the worst spot and if u have carpet definitly take it off the floor.  dnt stack on top of anything aswell. seems this migh be only a prob with the new designed ps3s the originals hadnt had this prob. i hadnt heard my fan to this day.

well, I haven't really noticed anything because my PC next to my PS3 is way louder, so I can't imagine what you're going through. But just a fan running faster than usual can't be that big a problem, can it? It's not like it's gonna kill your PS3 or anything

the ps3 does that whenever its performing a task whether you're aware of the task or not. you're over reacting. the only time to worry about it is if there is a smell coming from it (burning), or if the fan doesn't work at all.

If you listen carefully you'll notice at least 3 fan speeds. I think it goes up to 5 levels, being the fifth the worst case when your PS3 is overheating.

He's not over reacting. This happens when the PS3 is not performing any task at all, even when it's idle in XMB.

Ok, but does your PS3's fan keep spinning at the same speed for hours? This is the problem here. After a while, when the system gets cooler, the fan level should step down and it doesn't, ever.

hoops1992

Then why does a lot of people say the fan speed goes down after a while? Do they have the faulty ones?

This is all very strange to say the least. Sony claimed time and time again that the PS3 was as quiet as a slimline PS2 and i and a lot of other Europeans just found out that the PS3 is as noisy as the original PS2...

the problem is that the fans spin at the same speed when you are playing a game and when your ps3 running idle on XMB.to be honest this is something that bothers me. the ps3's fans aren't supposed to run that way because the guy on the hotline said that those consoles (consoles having an issue with the fan management) have to send back anyway.

Well there goes your problem right there ( wonders if people actually read the manuals that came with the system? ) but like it says in one of the manuals,,,,DO NOT......i repeat....DO NOT PLACE YOUR PS3 ON THE FLOOR, ( but then again that goes for most electronics ) because the PS3 is not shock proof, meaning everytime you walk, stomp or etc you are messing up your PS3 due to vibrations.

I believe i got the same problem. When not running anything at all it goes highest to lvl 2, but after playing a game the fan keeps running at lvl 3 without going down a lvl at all.

Like i said, this is very common. It's not only a few PS3 owners, it's a lot of them.

Sony really needs to come out and talk about this. I'm starting to think that besides the lack of Emotion Engine, our PS3s are also made with less quality parts.

Well if that's an issue, then they should ask you to send yours in and send you a brand new one, right?

According to a few swedish gamers, their "problem" started when they installed F@H. They formated the ps3 and didn't install the F@H, it started to "work" as normal.

Anyways im taking mine back to the store and getting a new one.

That's curious, i think that's what happened to me too. Before i installed Folding@Home i am sure my PS3's fan stepped down. If this is the case then maybe this can be solved via firmware update? Or just completely formating the system.

they talk about the same problems..and

"I think it's safe to say that if you're buying a new PS3, try to ask for a unit that does not have a serial number that starts with CE133212XXX or CE133190XXX. It's possible that it will be a defective unit. Of course this doesn't mean that all units with those serial numbers are defective, but the defective units appear to be in that range. Best to be safe than sorry."

My serial number is not like those ones. It's a bunch of numbers and then ends in CECH04 (i think this is the batch reference).

Mine goes to stage 3 when I play a lot and having it on most of the day(weekends).

Normal to loud within 30 mins! But the PS3 is not as loud as the 360 fan.

Can i save my game saves into a USB flash memory? If i format the system i'll lose all my data and i don't what to lose my games progress. lusitanogamer

Yes you can, just insert the flash drive and then select the game save and press triangle and choose copy.  This should bring up a menu showing your flashdrive, just select it and press X.  I have both my PS3 and PS2 games saves on my computer and backup harddrive.

Also, my PS3 fan does kick in pretty loud after about 30 min. However, it's not as bad as people make it seem.  I've had mine since December, and it has never crashed, overheated, or shut down on me.  I had a few issues with Oblivion, but that was the game not the system.  Also, with Oblivion, I played 5 hours straight, and everything held up, the system does get warm, but not uncomfortably warm.

Thanks for your help. Does your fan speed step down after a while? The problem with the European consoles is that they are unable to step down the fan speed when it reaches level 3.

This is not a problem. This is normal for all PS3's, and it was the way it was built to operate. The longer you keep your PS3 on, the warmer it will get inside, so that is why Sony has built the fan to step up a level when it is on for a longer period of time, and it's not going to step down until you turn it off. Also, the reason why it steps up when you are running folding@home is because folding@home uses the PS3's CPU (Cell Processor), causing the CPU to warm up, and the fan is just doing it's job.

I repeat, nothing is wrong with anyone's PS3. This is absolutely normal.

while I do believe this is annoying, and one selling point is how quiet the PS3 is, atleast this isn't a problem that causes the PS3 to go bad. it's a loud fan.....atleast you KNOW it's keeping everything cool so you don't have to worry about overheating. but it would be nice if Sony recognized the problem and had a fix. could be a simple firmware problem of when the fans should turn on.

[QUOTE="lusitanogamer"]Can i save my game saves into a USB flash memory?

There was only once instance where my fan stepped down, however, since it was only one instance, I don't count on it to ever happen when the fan kicks into high speed. It seems like an issue, however, given the fantastic performance of the PS3 so far, I think that new owners are a little over-protective about their investment, and that's ok, the PS3 wan't cheap and we all waited so long for it to arrive in our homes.  Just take everyone else's advice on here, it's normal, and it does not affect the system's life or performance. Have Fun!
