Can 1.80 Firmware Update upscale PS2 and DVDs to 720p and 1080i also?

I have a HDTV that can run on 720p, 1080i, but not 1080p. what does that mean, exactly? Will the PS3 still upscale the game to 1080i? Or will it just leave it at 480p?

From what I have read it can upsale UP TO 1080p, which would mean it can also upscale to 720 or 1080i.  Upscaling of DVD's requires a HDMI connection.

It will! It upscales up to 1080p. Meaning 720p and 1080i are also included in that list.

It will! It upscales up to 1080p. Meaning 720p and 1080i are also included in that list.Anime4kXL

Just a note, the firmware says "resolutions" not just resolution so there is some hope for you.

Even if it was incapable of 720p upscaling, it would still at least be capable of upscaling to 1080i. Upscaling to 1080i uses pretty much the same algorithms as upscaling to 1080p, except at half the framerate. Your TV can then scale it again to 720p.

i stopped playing ps2 games and dvd movies bc they look like crap on my HDTV

u guys are so caught up on petty words....it says UP TO 1080p...this means that all other rezs are supported......

You do, however, have to have an HDMI connection to upscale i hear....i have one so tis cool.

No, DVD players aren't allowed to legally upscale via analog except through VGA. You need a digital connection.

Games can be upscaled via component.  Just not movies.

Its probably done via a routine in the rendering software, so in theory it should work for all games made compliant to sonys specs, which are also the ones which should be BC anyway. Of course, that also would mean its not interpolated at all but simply displayed at a higher resolution. Guess we gotta see which way they choose.

It's under BD/DVD settings now...24fps for 1080p.
