Have held off buying a PS3 because of the steep price, but with all the new articles coming out about the discontinuing of backwards compatibility models (60 GB a while back and now Best Buy is pulling 80 GB models), I have figured I better do it now or won't be able to later (I don't have a PS2).

Is it even possible to buy a 60 GB from a retailer anymore, or has anyone had any luck seeing some recently?

You can get used 60gb @ eb/gamestop if they have any for like $430, which is a really good deal. They should be plenty of 80gbs still in stores and they have good backwards compatibility at like 85% or something like that. You might want the extra 20gbs bc demos and game installs take up space but you can probably just get a 60gb used or online( more expensive?) and put in your own hdd

youd be foolish to not get a new 80 gig instead of 430 for a used 60. Not a big fan on used systems especially when they are only 70 bucks cheaper then having a brand new one with a bigger hard drive.

The 60gb is only available around stores if you ask. The 80gb will be hard to find but not as hard as finding the 60.

Nope, its not available any where in my area. The Internet is your best choice or call some stories but I doubt they will have them in stock.

I thought I found a stockpile of 60gb with extra controller at Sams Club. Even bought one. When I went to pick it up at customer service, they only had 80gb and a couple returned bad condition 60gb without controller. Ended up returning it. Turns out they never pulled the cardboard things that you use to purchase the system. Needless to say I was pissed and still looking for a 60gb. May just settle for an 80 because of the rumors.

If you happen to have a gamecrazy in your area, just go there and they can special order one from a store who still have some in stock, and ship it to the one in your area. That's what I did, about a month ago. I haven't even opened it yet, because I just wanted one that was b/c. I'm waiting for MGS4.

The 60 gig is going to be tough to find, now the 80 gig will be the best bet.

It must be my lucky day. I just got a brand new sealed 60Gb PS3 at target of all places. I sold my ps2 just a couple weeks ago, thinking I had a place to grab a 60gb, but of course they sold out when I was ready to purchase. Was going to settle for an 80gb or even go to ebay for a 60gb used. One of my friends in LA has both and 80 and 60 and said the 60 is better for backwards compatibility, the 80 has framerate issues on some games he said. Backwards Compatibility is important to me as well, need to save space. I happened to be at target today and they had a sticker on the glass for their PS3 games advertising the 60GB price drop to 499.99. I asked the lady if they by chance had any in stock. She checked her inventory and showed one. She went to grab it and the box was all beaten up. She checked inventory for me at another store and they had 2. Drove down and picked it up. Apparently you have to ask for the 60gb at target, since it's a discontinued item. If anyone needs the target stock # it is 207230001. Paid $499.99 plus tax. Hope this helps anyone looking for a sixty. I'm pretty excited, especially with the rumor of even the 80gb being dropped. No worries about BC for me now. Off to hook up my system.

Just finished setting up to my home theatre system and updating the PS3. So far very impressed. Good luck if you are searching. I tried for the last couple days and was about ready to give up.
