Can i buy Lost planet 2 without playing Lost planet 1???

Hi ppl.. it might be too early but i just decided to buy the LP2 just after watching the trailer of it here..

Is playing Lost planet 1 necessary or can i go ahead purchasing the sequel coz i really love the gameplay and cinematics...and is the 1st game worth buying even now as i havent played it because of poor reviews...wat r ur opinions ppl???

LP1 pretty much has nothin to do with LP2 accept for the bit at the end of LP1 where they change the environment with these things they put in the ground
