The PS3 is a computer, so you can buy an external hard drive and use it like you would for a regular desktop. I am not sure if there are specific kinds that are compatible though, perhaps check the manual for information.

you can get a 250-500 gb hard drive for about 75-80 bucks, I got a 250 6 months ago for about 80, but they are a little cheaper now. Just backup your data, put your new drive into the bottom of the ps3, and let the ps3 do the rest for you. It takes a little time to install everything, but the backup will restore everything you had before the upgrade.

yes it needs to be a laptop drive such as the 2.5" SATA HDD, and its easy i upgraded mine from 60GB to 250GB :D

but on mine i found that the screws were hard to get out coz they were put in so tightly...

i have a 300gb, before you try installation though, be sure all the screw drivers fit exactly, or they screws will act like a B!@#E$ (in fact, i really wonder how many people we able to have unstripped screws when they were done) i couldnt get the screws to come out of the hdd so now my new one is kinda rigged inside with no frame around the hdd, you'll see what i mean

switch out the hard drive, just make sure it's a laptop hard drive. Also, the PS3 runs at 5400RPM, though most people seem to go to 7200rpm with no problem. Heck, there are people with solid states that worked find. As a word of warning though, the hard drive is AWFUL to unscrew. the screws are really tight and extremely soft, perhaps the easiest to strip screws i've ever encountered. so be careful and make sure you have the EXACT right screwdriver. Also, some of the screws (the blue one for sure) are custom screws, which means that outside of contacting Sony, they're more or less irreplaceable.

agree about the screw problems, when i swapped out my HD i didn't bother with screwdrivers i undid the screws with pliers saved stripping them.
