Is it possible to overclock the PS3? I was playing Orange box all day yesterday and in HL2:episode 1 I was in the last section and the framerate in certain sections just about slowed to slideshow quality. It was only for a few seconds and then went back to normal but it was frustrating because it caused me to die a coupla times and kinda took away from the immersiveness of the game.

I overclock all my PCs so I have an extra Zalman fan and some Arctic cooling paste, so i was wondering if there was a way to increase the voltage to the cell and add extra cooling to get the framerate up?

It's not the lack of power, it's the lack of optimization done on the game.

I don't believe you can overclock a console. Off Topic, I just bought a new PC from newegg that I am going to build, and I was wondering if that arctic cooling paste is worth it or not?

The problem you had was nothing to do with the speed of the console but the way the game was developed. The only way of really fixing this is if the developer releases a patch for the problem. Within the next year or so the frame rate issues would be something of the past on the PS3. The power is already there but it hasen't been tapped by the developers yet.

In tests they pretty much all work the same, but its not like Arctic Silver is that expensive for a 1/2 oz syringe of the stuff. I always use either that or their Ceramique thermal paste.

It reallydepends onwhether you will overclock or not. If you're just running at stock speeds then yeah you can get away with the generic paste & fan that comes with your cpu. But if you intend to start nudging up the voltage then every degree of cooling you can get matters, so if thats the case go with Arctic MX or another good paste.

On topic -- yeah I guess it makes sense that its the code not the chip. Itll be nice when the devs start tapping the power of the cell though!

I have the same chip, it has plenty of OC headroom. Got mine up tojust under 3.0 ghz and no issues going on 6 months. get a zalman or other high performance fan though, dont go with the stock fan that comes with it.

Half Life 2: Episodes 1 and 2 have framerate problems, all the rest are fine. It's not the PS3. its EA's fault.

Yea that will be col. If Naughty Dog is not BS us. And Uncharted only used like 40% of the PS3s processor. Its the best looking PS3 game out. So I have to think some of these thier developers are just lost. And getting like 10% lol. Or taking dives??:P

But Uncharted 2? maybe we see what they have learned? RESISTANCE 2? So may say MGS4. I dont think MGS4 will have the advantage a second running game does.

Its kinda fun also in a sense. We still have not really seen the true PS3. Because it is so advanced, it may be a year before we do. Although im sure 08 stuff will be good. You know 09 will be stronger even. And on and on. And 2011 will be better than 2010 even. So tha fun to just have better and better. Which I know is the case every gen. But more so than ever with the PS3.

But its a cool feeling to wounder how far can it go. How much can it do when someone figures it. How rich will the 3rd party game developer that taps it be. Its like the ultimate Lotto for poor 3rd party teams, if they really wanted to be in the fame. Be the first to hit the PS3 good.

Well, the games which are produced exclusively for your PS3 would never ever make a problem in such. Nevertheless, some imported games like "orange box" (which are multiplatformer) would have some mis-optimized features that may casue such problems. Nevertheless, you can even come over this "2 seconds that caused your death in the game" by keeping your ps3 in a cooler and well climatized median... not keeping the hardisc full.... making the system optimized for your TV set and stuff.

It is obvious that , any game that is commercialized for ps3 will deffinetely work smooth and wont need any upgraded ps3 like overclocked cpu...

Since this console has standart features like any other console, if a game is available on the market, it means this game can work with this consoles boundries.

Well if you stil wish to overclock a cpu ; I have to call this as...."AMBITION" :)

Do you mean overclock the RAM, the GPU or the CPU? The CPU is already insanely fast, but a suppose the GPU and/or memory could use a bit of a boost. I wish Sony would have put in the ability to upgrade the RAM.

Overclocking the PS3 does nothing..lol. In fact it's such a weird thing to suggest. We don't have the control over the games performance as PC users do with the immense amount of settings in their games to control the graphics settings and AA etc.
