They should allow a one time change, cuz I would hate it if my friends constantly keep on changing their names.

I do not believe you can change you PSN name since that is the unique identifier across all PSN services.

It's not going to happen. I would like it though. I'm kinda tired of my name, but I'm too much of a trophy whore to change it.

One time change wouldn't be bad, and maybe charge for any additional change like XBL so everybody isn't constantly doing it.

actually, no, its your email that is the unique identifier. SONY is just lazy to add on the feature.

they constantly do it anyway, sometimes I don't turn on my xbox for months and come back only to see a bunch of people i've never heard of...i like how you have to keep your psn name...although i do think that a one time change would be pretty cool

Sony should definitely allow a 1 time PSN username change, since that's the information they let out on to the internet...

Well actually no its not since Japan has the option. Saying that It's not worth it unless it was free ofc, but then I guess people would abuse the system somehow..I can understand why some people might want to but at the end of the day its just a screen name. Personally I like mine it contains my name and my love of chocolate ;p

Perhaps I'm missing the obvious, but what does changing your PSN ID do to prevent you from identity theft? They already have everything they need.

Not on PSN it isn't. You could change your email ID anytime you wished on PSN, but you couldn't change the User Name ID of the Master Account that you gave yourself.

Perhaps I'm missing the obvious, but what does changing your PSN ID do to prevent you from identity theft? They already have everything they need.

Large_Soda

Well, the link between your current PSN ID and the personal info that was stolen wouldn't be connected. As for your personal information.... white pages would have the same exact information (name, address, phone number, city, state....), minus the credit card/debt cards info. But PSN is now saying that info hasn't been cracked....

And as for the birthday info, PSN is the only site that I've seen that used that as a ID verification..... (mother's maiden name seems to be the most common one.)

I'd like to be able to change it, but it's not likely as your PSN ID has no security risk.

All you need for your PSN ID is the email and password. PSN ID is just basically for show.

Okay I literally just burst out laughing. No security risk? WTF! What do you call Sony letting 77 million users details out in to the wild?

It wasn't because of what you named your PSN ID...

I can tell someone my PSN ID, and they can't do anything with it. They'd need my email address and password.

Changing your PSN ID will do nothing.

I guess you've been under a rock for the last few days? Did you miss that bit of the news where we all got told that Sony was recently exploited, and managed to give away the PSN ID, email address, password, address details, and date of birth of 77 million users? If you don't think your current PSN ID is a security risk I don't know what to say!

Are you talking about the PSN ID, as in everything? Or just the Username?

I'm talking about just your Username.

Once you change your password, and maybe if you're able to change your email address linked to your account, I don't see being able to change your Username being neccessary.

Here in the uk you can change your PSN id by calling Sony and asking for it. For the service they charge you, 2 years ago this was ten pounds. I have no idea what it costs now but it can be done, not through the console though.

I hope so. I wouldnt change mine, but i would like to have the opportunity to do so when i want. Of course letting it be free would mean people would constantly change their names, so i think it should cost 10 dollars or something.

This is what they think the hacker may have access to.

Highly likely

  • Name
  • Address including State,Zip,postcode ETC
  • Country
  • Email address
  • Birthdate
  • PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login.

Probable but not confirmed yet

  • Purchase history and billing address
  • PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers

Unlikely

  • Credit/debit card details

I believe they're making it mandatory to change passwords when PSN is back up not sure about the login though.

Why would changing your PSN name matter? Everyone you've ever played with before already knew that. If you are talking about the sign in name (email address) disregard my comment.

Thats not the point this now means your a potential a target where you probably weren't before, the risk of you been targeted for identity theft probably increased 10-20 fold.

Not likely. Keep in mind there are supposedly 70 million PSN accounts. I don't know what the odds of identity theft are normally, but for 70 million to 1, I like my odds.
