Just wondering if you can download whole games to the hard drive like the 360 can?

Yes you can buy them from the PSN store.

You mean install? No you can't. But you can download games from an online store if that's what you meant.

The games you can download from the online store, are we talking mainstream games like GTA and Burnout, or are we talking secondary games?

They are mostly small, secondary games like on XBLA. Although you can indeed download a few full size games like Burnout Paradise, Socom, GT5P, Warhawk and Siren.

Plenty of retail games offer installs or buffering to speed up load times on the PS3. It isn't an across the board option like on the new 360 firmware though.
