Castlevania: Symphony of the Night; is it worth it?

I have never in my life played a Castlevania game in my life. I keep on hearing about how this, MGS1, and FF7 are the best games of the ps1. Really? Can this game really be in the same sentence as those two games?

I looked at some gameplay vids on youtube and it seemed okay. I want a good portable game to keep me busy.

Would you still reccomend it to me? Is it just a game that i have to play to understand? Does it feel outdated?

Also, should i get the ps1 classics one or should i just buy the Castlevania Chronicles game?

Get chronicles. You basicly getting 3 awesome games in one. Which a remake of rondo of blood the orginal version and SOTN. I own chronicles and it kept me busy. Just to let you know you have to unlock SOTN and the orginal rondo of blood. Its not hard though just look at a faq to see where are they in the game and you unlock them. Its pretty simple. FF7 is a great game jrpg and worth the pick up if you are interested enough. MGS1 is still great,but if you played the morerecent MGS games it might take a while to get use to the camra.

:shock: It's more like those two games don't belong in the same sentence as Symphony of the night. Imo, SOTN is the best ps1 game ever. (And I'm a big fan of those two games).

I have castlevania: the dracula X chronicles, and the main game (from which you unlock SoTN) is pretty hard so it can get disouraging at the beginning. Yet, you unlock SoTN fairly early on and that game is better. Plus you can unlock a special character.

hmm...but does the remake do justice to the original SOTN? For example, there was a MGS1 remake for the Gamecube, however, it bastardized the first game and therefore, i would recommend anyone to play the ps1 instead. Does Dracula X follow suit? By chance, have you played the original (no offense or anything)?director13

Get Dracula X Chronicles, definately. But one thing, don't expect a MGS or FFVII quality game with Symphony of the Night (or Rondo of Blood)The Castlevania's are old school style games, so you won't be getting an elaborate story or eye-popping cutscenes, etc. (well, except for Dracula X's intro...)
That being said, they're still great, but don't go in expecting one of the greatest games of all time.

Well yeahh, I'm not saying it isn't one of the best, but for someone who cut their teeth on games with complex combat sytems, stunning graphics, cinematic gameplay, and intriguing plots, they may be a little underwhelmed after their first impression of Castlevania after hearing people go on about how great it is.

Haha, well you definately have good taste. :P Anyway yeahh, I think the game's a greatest hits release now, so it should definately be worth the money. Then you can decide for yourself how Castlevania ranks among the elite. :)
