You wont lose trophies if you have already sync'd them to the server. If you don't want to spend too much money I suggest you buy the 3 month PS+ package that is only $18 because then you get to take advantage of the online save data storage so that right there elimates the need to put your save data onto a USB flashdrive or external harddrive. I just upgraded to a 500 GB harddrive the other day and that's what I did :P
It's possible to transfer 10 gigs worth of stuff via flash drive if you have one that size. If you're only transferring that much i wouldn't bother getting an external hard drive. Even if you don't have a large enough flash drive, that will still be cheaper than an external. Yes you need a 2.5 inch Sata, but I would try to look for a 5400rpm. 4500 is slower than the one that comes with the PS3. You can use a 7200 rpm too, it doesn't make much difference over 5400. And no trophies are pretty impossible to lose...trust me there's tons of people that would be happy to be able to get rid of some trophies they got unwillingly. :P
You can get a 16gb flash drive from best buy for $20 right now. I'd link it but stupid GS won't let me for some reason.

This really is a darned good idea and will be my plan of action when I upgrade. I too am stuck with the tiny 40g drive.:(
im thinking of doing this too. is there anyway to get games you downloaded online saved onto an external HD or something?
No it's save data only. @Monkeypoo: There is no way to transfer downloaded games to another drive, although minis/psp games might work, i'm not sure. You can always redownload them though..Whoah. Will the online storage work with my music & vids also, or is it strictly for game saves??

There's no need to transfer downloaded games because you can just go to the PSN store, go to the top, select "view downloads" and re-download everything you bought.
