I really liked this mission because it was different in that you don't just shoot everybody. It was the kind of mission you don't often see, and was interestingly original and intense, at least the first time through, even if it was a bit easy IMO. Anyway, that isn't really my point.

I obviously knew a little bit about Chernobyl before playing the game, but I decided to just have a quick look on the internet about Chernobyl after playing the game. Ididn't learn much else, I start to lose interest after reading about different radioactive isotopes.... But the photos were amazing. The mission tht Infinity Ward created was brilliant. Look at some photos of Chernobyl and you will see what I mean. They recreated it perfectly. I never actually realised things like the ferris wheel actually existed, and I didn't know many of the buildings you see in the game are real places too.

Anyway, I just found looking at real photos interesting, as they're very similar to the game, and thought someone else might be interested too.

Even just the wikipedia pages have some good photos: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pripyat

Yep, recognize it? It's kind of a scary thought when you think of it, this place used to be populated.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Like in the game when he says fifty thousand people used to live there and now it's a ghost town. It just never really hit me until I saw photos and realised the places in the game are actual places in real life too. And it's not just the swimming pool, but the surrounding apartments as well.

It would be strange to go there now dont you think? I mean, obviously you can't go to some parts, but seeing a real big city where tens of thousands of people used to live which is now all but abandoned must be really interesting. I read on wikipedia that some of the people who still live in Chernobyl put signs up saying 'owner of the house lives here'. How weird would it be to see that?

Wow there are lots of CoD noobs here :D Since the first Call of Duty it is well documented that all the locations in IWD games are painfully modeled and researched to look like their real life counterpart as much as possible. Prior to CoD 4, the Call of Duty franchise was a historical shooter (with a ton of Hollywood) so they spent a lot time getting the look and historical accuracy of thier settings down. They went Normandy, shoot all the guns to get the "feel" and to get sound recording and stuff. They even bought in Captain Dale, Spielburg's military advisor from Saving Private Ryan LOL!

This all changed with CoD 4 of course, they made everything up...with the exception of Chernobyl :D

Yeah Chernobyl Nuclear power plant went bang when they were doing testing on the new reactor i think it was and the panels didn't show what was really going on in the reactor so they didn't know it was gonna blow. Some guy saw what was going on but by the time he ran back to tell them it was too late anyways. After that the the Ukraine goverment went to clean the mess up and it really bankrupt the country from the cost of doing it, most of the radiation went into Russia anyways lol. Now the town just sits as a ghost town, like Famagusta in Cyprus where the Turkish own the land but for some reason wont let anyone in, kinda weird too....

From wikipedia:

"The 2005 report prepared by the Chernobyl Forum, led by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and World Health Organization (WHO), attributed 56 direct deaths (47 accident workers, and nine children with thyroid cancer), and estimated that there may be 4,000 extra deaths due to cancer among the approximately 6.6 million most highly exposed. Specifically, the report cited 4,000 thyroid cancer cases among children diagnosed by 2002."

It take thousands upon thousands of years for it to fully go, some of it wont go for like 500,000 years....

I remember the radiation traveling as far as the UK, after the blast.

I remember doing a project about nuclear power and uranium mining in year 8 about 7 years ago and reading about the nuclear reactor explosion in Chernoby. i still remmeber what I read that 4000 people were killed and the area was permently exacuated, and that the blast was so bad it reachedthousands apon thousands of kilometers and scattered radiation all over europe andall over the contnet, so its still uncertin weather how long it'll take before Chernoby is a safe palce,it takes nuclear waste 250 000 years to be pushed down until its a safe material to be dump close to a residental area.

it wont be at least another few 50 or 200 years before Chernoby is fully save from any nuclear waste bacteria or snything which could harm things, but for Chernoby to be fully safe it'll be easly into the 31st century.

but back onto topic and I also thought that the Chernoby level is one of the best FPS levels I've ever played really intense and looks exactly like Chernoby. What was really weird though was that that if it was like 15 years ago but COD4 is still set abit into the future the Chernoby event would of allready happned easly 20 years ago and how they were still amazed at what happened weird.

yes, i live in the netherlands, and there was radiation in our vegetables...

But most areas in Chernobyl are safe now. Some areas though (like the hotspot) will have radiation for a long time.

lol theres these people who are 80/90 years old and have lived and still living in Chernobyl all their lives, the Radiation never did them any harm and they have kids who have kids and they're all fine. Was on this TV program and apparently it's illegal to live there or w/e but they still do.

The fair ground is one of the more contaminated parts of the town. It had been due to open on 1 May 1986, five days after the disaster, and was never used.

some people never experience anything from it. somepeople die of cancer, some people get horrible deformed children.

It's horrible what happened there and it should never happen again. watch this: http://todayspictures.slate.com/inmotion/essay_chernobyl/
