I had the very same problem... until i found the solution, it now works like a charm. Are you using wireless ? If so, make sure your ps3 ip is in your router dmz. Disable the UPnP in the PS3. It should connect immediately. :)PM me if you need to know more.

Is this the solution to all the "COD connecting" problems ppl have? If it is i will get it when i buy my PS3(today/tmr)
The only time I had issues with COD 4 connecting to play online is when the game came out for about 2 weeks.
Once the patch arrived and up to today it's been doing well. If you're sometimes stuck on "Downloading" screen when you click "Play Online" give it a little time, usually it will connect right away.
I haven't had any issues connecting. The only problems I've experienced is hosts quitting the match like 5/10 games played. I mean, for god sakes, just play the game!
