Few days ago I was having server troubles with COD4 so I was forced to return to the PS3 menu. Once there, the menu and joypad froze up without reason so I reset the console. When I started up again I recieved a message like: HDD damaged, continue to reformat. Then it started looping over and over, suffice to say my PS3 HDD was officially broken.

The thing is, when I was looking for a way to fix it I noticed other peoples' problems happened in exactly the same way, first a problem with COD4 then a freeze up. I wonder could the COD4 game itself be causing the problem?

It's highly doubtful the game CD even has the capacity to harm your PS3 HD that way. Something else triggered the Hard-Drive problem.

I highly recommend you contact customer service.

They should replace it without problem.

Yes it's a recognised problem that the community just beginning to become aware off. The exact same thing happened to me and a mate. WhenI told the helpline people my issue they automatically assumed it was COD4 that broke it and said their getting dozens of calls every hour with this problem

I could never play my COD4 online after the update.I erased everything about 6 times and it never worked again, it's a shame because I was half way through veteran difficulty, and I was really starting to like the online gam. Well, atleast i stil have my beloved warhawk.

If hard drives are breaking, it's the hard drive itself that has a problem. The game *might* exacorbate the problem to a full lock up on the HD - I'm using a western digital 160GB in my PS3 (originally 20 GB) and haven't had a single problem, and I'm sure I won't since I'm using hardware that I know is good.

No, It's not the game that harms your PS3.

No I wouldn't do. Even though it is increasing the failure rate is nothing to horrendous. Otherwise, this forum would be flooded with complaints

I had two random crashes during my SP play-through but after restarting it, it was fine. So far, I haven't had any problems at all.

I had a couple issues with mine freezing but it was due to it timing out talking to the servers and my router was blocking those ports. When plugged directly into my modem not a freeze or anything.

Have had other freezes that forced me to restart my PS3 as well but no issues with my HDD. I normally back up my HDD every other week.

When the game first came out, I read about CoD4 bricking systems on a couple of forums. I've been playing it for about three weeks now, mostly online, and I haven't had any problems with it.

I think the COD4 is somewhat mess up lately. A few days ago, when I log in to play ONLINE, I notice all the names on my custom configurations were missing. All 5 of them gone. I had to renamed them. There COD4 server is up and down lately. I never had any trouble before the update. Oh well, back to Warhawk.

EDIT:

ANd if i got back to my SINGLE mode, well at least my SINGLE mode save is still there. I really like playing Challenge on the EPILOGUE map... pretty cool.

I have made 2 other posts about COD4 online freezing my system. It happens literally about every other game I play in online multiplayer. The screen freezes, the controller stops working, and the system locks up. I have to turn off the system from behind and restart. My PS3 freezes ONLY when I play COD4 online (never froze during single player and I beat the game). No other games, no other time. Its very frustrating. So you arent alone.
