Hey I was thinking about getting a PS3 soon (used most likely), along with a high def TV, and was wondering what common (or not so common anymore) problems the PS3 has had. I own an Xbox already and I know about the RROD and the problem some have with disc scratching, but am not aware of problems the PS3 has had and want to know what to look out for.

Well there's... erm... you know the one... erm... ahh wait, yes, there isn't any. There's a "Yellow Light of Doom" which affects like 0.6% of the PS3's, but it's common around the launch 60 gigs. Which they don't sell so you're pretty safe. Oh, and I'm not sure if this has something to do with my PS3 being American, playing supposedly English games (says so on the back, but games aren't region locked), but mine freezes sometimes. About twice a month. Nothing to be like WOAHHH ITS TEH FREEZIN' FREEZE O' DEATH. But more like, "Damn, I'm gonna have to restart and do that last checkpoint. We also have the best exclusives. Oh wait, that's not a problem...

I haven't really encountered any PS3 problems yet, maybe an occasional freeze, but that's about it.

Cool, so as long as I stay away from the 60 GB launch models I should be good. So what causes the Yellow Light of Doom, overheating, like the RROD?

I didn't used to, I was more the break-into-the-hen-house-and-steal-all-the-eggs kind of person, and would then make an awesome omelet, but since the bunnies my cholesterol has gone down :P

Yeah I have a 60Gb and the only thing I ever experience is the occasional freeze-up. Like once a week my system will freeze, and I play about 2hrs. a day.

The two biggest problems I've experienced and come across are obviously the Yellow Light, and the faulty blu ray lasers. The blu ray thing is when your ps3 suddenly stops reading discs, thats the one that happened to me. Sucks because its completely unavoidable the day before it happened was when I bought Killzone2 in the morning, played about 4 hours through out the day and the following morning it died. Very random and it was in the 13th month of warranty so yea sony charged 190.97 which i refuse to pay, I'll just repair it myself eventually. Unfortunately there are no stats on failure rates because sony never released that information. I'm not trying to be a bearer of bad news but better to be warned isnt it? IF it does happen to you, hopefully it doesnt but it happened to me and alot of other people its very possible it could happen to you too.
