I'm most likely buying a PS3 tomorrow, and would like some opinions on this matter. Best Buy will sell me a 2-year replacement warranty for $69.99 (I'm getting the 60GB version). This is a replacement warranty, so if the system breaks in any way, I can walk into Best Buy, and walk out with a new one, no questions asked. I'm concerned because I went through4 PS2's in the system's lifespan. Was it bad luck? I don't know, but it proved unreliable. How have your experiences been so far, and do you think the warranty is worth it? Thanks everyone!

Theres no doubt that the ps3 is the console with the best reliability atm. I wouldnt worry even a bit about that.

I agree that the PS2 was perhaps not the most reliable system in the world. I too went through three of them. The PS3 however, is a different story. Reports show a 1% return rate. Mine has worked flawlessly since the day I got it, nearly a year ago.

I played my PS2 a lot. Not exactly at insomiac addict level or anything, but I'm sure more than what was intended. I'm only on my second. I'd say that was bad luck. As for the PS3, there are no major issues or concerns, unless you call lack of AAA exclusives a major issues or concern. If you dont, you have no worries. The hardware is practically flawless. I think Sony learned from their last mistake...or just traded that mistake for a few new ones. Either way, I have faith that they will get their act together.

Nice! And it comes with a warranty from Sony anyway, correct? Is it 1-year?

the PS3 seems very reliable (not bigconstruction flawencountered often). you can ask several shops how many returns they had. you can find on internet what components are in the PS3 and their cost (comparing it to the X360 if you want).

Over the years with each new console Sony looks at any past problem and try not to make the same mistake in hardware development. The PS1 had problems with the first part of there life but they got somewhat better at the end. The PS2 had problems at the begining and Sony was trying to correct the problem when it was learned about and when the PS2 slim was released it was fixed. With the PS3 when there is a problem they get to work ASP to find a cure for the problem. There have been some firmware updates that had problems but was corrected as soon as they could develope a cure for the problem.

anytime you buy an electronic that is priced over 500 dollars then it is always a safe and sane thing to buy an extended warranty just for the fact that you just dropped 500-600 bucks on it

but i still believe and have faith in my PS3 and it is an extremely reliable machine that even thought cost me a little over $600 doesnt really need an extended warranty

I bought the warranty back when I bought my system at launch and so far greatly regret it. . .It cost me $99 for 2 years from Best Buy and my system has run flawlessly.

Oh well, at least it didn't break down.

Yeah, really it has a less than 1% failure rate, It's extremely reliable and as some certain experiments proved, built to last through anything lol, heat, cold steam lol. Anyway, I would say you don't even need the plan as there is very little chance anything will happen. Still if it makes oyu feel better, then go ahed, though you could put that $69.99 toward a game.

The PS3 has the best reliability out of all 4 current gen game systems (360, PS3, PC, Wii). I think it has a 0.1% failure rate as opposed to 33% on 360.

you have nothing to worry about the ps3. ive had the best of luck regarding my playstations especially ps2 which never caused any problems for me and hope ps3 continues that trend.

So TC save your money and buy a game instead of the replacement plan

Ive heard of peoples ps3's breaking cause of overheat, so it not less than 1%. anyways my broke down cause of bad power supply or something like that, and i returned it to sony and they replaced me with a refurbished one, but it looks brand new, and plays well, hopefully it wont break no more, i have it in a more ventilated place now placed vertically. Just telling the truth because everythingof technology can break down...
