They only mentioned it in the begining, and Payton says so what.
brodcast 85.
Even if it wasnt. He had 2 choices, either pack a 50 or so GB BR disc, and take some content off. Or dual one, and get a 100GB disc. And have the room to do the game. Like I said remember a DVD has 4.7 or GB. What was fact was they said he did have to back off not to fill the sigle layer tyical BR 50GB. truenextgen
I thought single layer blu rays were 25gb...
Yea,, He does say they use a daul. And he says they almost filled that. But he also says a dual is 50. I m pretty sure a single is 50.truenextgen
Yea thats what I just wrote about above you. My bad. I must of been thinking dual all along when talking MGS "and speaking of BR all along." I have to watch what I say before the sun actually rises for everyone to see lol 8)
Umm...I not a tech wiz....how would I get this 'dual layer' thing? Is it in an update or does my PS3 already have it installed? Does it come with MGS4? Thanks in advance--Sinister--
From what I know, it is on the actual disk, not the player. Your player (PS3) is already capable to play dual layered disks regardless of blu ray or dvd

You won't have to get anything. It will look like a regular disc, except that it can hold twice as much data on it.
And yes a single layer BR disc is 25 gigs making a dual layer disc 50 gigs. What truenextgen was probably thinking of was dual-sided dual-layer where both sides of the disc are readable and dual layer. The problem there is that you have to flip the disc for content on the other side. But that would be good for bonus content I suppose.
Its over 50GB Big. A 60 disc at most dual is 9GB
That is if you wanted to know what it means. Next gen games that are over like 2 hour and actually have graphics and gameplay, and life to the game, in the latter years of this gen. Will all be over 40 GB at least. Its actually kinda simple math if you add up the poly couny compared to last gen and whats needed. And on screen also.truenextgen
I have to disagree with you here. I think we're still a while off before dual-layer BR discs are a required platform. MGS4 is around there because Kojima loves uncompressed audio and tons of expensive (in the fact that they take a lot of data) CGI cutscenes. Using compression techniques, they most likely could squeeze MGS4 inside of 25 gigs and thus have it fit on a single-layer disc, but in doing so, you lose some audio quality and possibly some graphical quality as far as textures go.
so what?NSR34GTR
Well it means hell get to put all the content he wanted. Its also a bench mark. Once one game comes out that is a full game. Something we really haven't seen this Gen. Others will follow.
I mean people had to realize just by the on screen graphics of this gen. Say 3 times even per second. That if that was the case. To get games as deep as last gen, with next gen graphics. Much more room would eventually be needed. Common sense really.
Again it comes down to last gen DVD at 5 to 10 GB, held last gen games ok. To this gen needing the 25 to 50GB. 5 to 10 times the space. If you dont have that space. And your doing a game 3 times as detailed on old media from last gen. The you wold have to make the games 3 to 5 time shorter than last gen. And thus you have a entire gen of vary short games.
And the large games of latter. Say a GTA SA scope game, with Next gen detail. Could only be done with 25 to 50 GB.

Yea but we haven't had a tun of real deep games this Gen. Last gen we had RE 4, like 35 to 40 hours "first run threw." FF 12 like 100 hours. Alot of next gen games im sure want to get to this point. And you have to think FF 13 wont be 9 GB.
Kojima already stated that the game would be to big even for Bluray and that was not several months ago... So if dual-layer was decided months ago then it is confirmed that not even 50gb is actually enough... Link below. Finally there is bluray technology for 100gb, but the PS3 can't read current versions. There was a thread out there awhile ago about a method of getting the ps3 to read 100gb discs simply through firmaware, but not sure if that will happen / is truly possible.

Yeah, all that (except about the 100gb disc) is in the podcast. It's about 1/3 of the way through.
Not sure what part is wrong in my post myze - honestly don't feel like going throug the podcast :)
Either way - here are two reports that Hitachi does have a 100gb disc that only requires firmaware update. So my post was correct (I only stated that I wasn't sure if it will happen / was possible) per these articles it is, but it isn't released yet...

;) I didn't say anything in your post was wrong, I was saying it was in the podcast because that is an official Konami thing, while Joystiq often posts only rumors. It was directed at people that don't believe rumors, not directed at you. (that's why I started off the post with "yeah," as in, I was agreeing with you, not being a smart @$$...at least I wasn't trying to be)
Also, I wasn't stating I didn't believe you about the 100gb disc, either. I read about it about 4-5 months ago. What I meant was, it's not mentioned at all on the podcast. Sorry for the confusion.

I see where you are coming from, but your original argument was for games much shorter than FF12 or RE4, that's what I was disagreeing with.
but metal gear solid 4 was always on a dual layer blu ray why is this such a big deal???
i have known for months that metal gear solid is on a 50gb disc and will take up the full 50gb of the disc. now only a while ago kijima said they have to cut lots of stuff out so the game will fit on the disc.
can someone please tell me how a dual layer disc can go from being "not enough for kojima" to "now kojima can put everything he wants on the disc". if 50gb was too small for kojima before there is no way that suddenly it can become huge and have loads more space.
50gb a month ago is still 50gb today
[QUOTE="azadiscool"]So will the price be changed?MusashiSensi
Hopefully not. I doubt it will affect the price.
Prices will not be affected. I just went yesterday and actually upgraded to the limited edition. It's still $60 for regular, and $84.99 is what the dude told me would be the price on the limited edition.
The fact that it's on a 50GB blu ray is just cool, it's not going to make the game absolutely GIGANTIC in terms of content, but being that the video and audio and other data is all uncompressed - it's just going to make the experience that much more worth it.
