Client statistics by OS

OS Type Current TFLOPS* Active CPUs Total CPUs
Windows 151 158987 1624628
Mac OS X/PowerPC 7 8706 95328
Mac OS X/Intel 7 2700 7192
Linux 35 24949 215658
GPU 41 691 2181
PLAYSTATION®3 304 12394 13329
Total 545 208427 1958316

The PS3 with only 12,394 people have output 304 Terraflops in only 2 days. That exceeds all other clients COMBINED including 160,000 PC's.

The CELL has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt it's potential. If all 2 million people with a PS3 ran this software we would be done with the folding project in one DAY instead of YEARS.

I would like to know what the PC client requires and what the average specs are for the PC Folding@Home client. Also does anyone know if on the PC client you can still use your computer while running the client?

This folding thing has me confused. Is it so popular because people want to help with whatever research is being done or is there something else? People seem to be building whole computers just for folding, and I can't believe it would just be because they want to help.

If that is the case however, that's pretty cool.

EDIT: Wow that's weird, I didn't expect there to be another thread addressing my exact question.  Nevermind.

You do know you will be adding around $40 - $50 to your electricity bill but let me guess you live at home with your mommy.

what i think sony should do is use this for the online because think about it 1 million user on at once in one game in one world like oblivion. all the cells world work together to make this happen. even using one spre would do the trick. everyones spre tide together to make one big highway for the information.

How is that an insult? I was just making sure you know how much this will end up costing but it depends if you pay your own bills or not. So if you live at home you wouldn't care and if you are a certain age where else would you live? I tell you some people can be so touchy...I lived with my mom at one point.

Are you social at all? Because saying that you guess someone lives at home with his "mommy" sounds pretty insulting.

Oh please quit hiding your rear tail behind words. Its clearly denigration at its finest to insinuate someone is dependent on their "mommy".

You simplly enjoy insulting people. Admit it.

Since when "mommy" is an insulting word and since when it was insulting to live with parents? Is everyone on this forum adults? Stop being so touchy about everything...

Anyways back on the relevent topic.

If progression of the PS3 folding proceeds (319 teraflops at the moment) it really might be possible to shorten years of resesarch into weeks.

A petaflop is an astronimical amount of processing power.

Consider Blue Gene the fastest machine on earth can do about 350 Terflops then the PS3 network is quickly approaching its processing power.

@Radiozo If you press the "triangle" button while you have Folding@home selected in the cross media bar you can set it to run automatically after a certain period of PS3 nonuse. I'm like you where I usually have my PS3 off, but I have folding at home set to automatically run after 10 minutes of idle time. Yesterday I came back after eating dinner and it was there crunching away when I came back.
