I'm trying to connect my ps3 to my monitor. I have an HDMI-DVI adapter but when I set everything up, the screen went blank. I know it works because it works fine on my 360 elite, but the stupid system can't physiclaly fit AV cables (for audio) and HDMI at the same time.

I tried resetting the video setting on my ps3 by pressing the power button for 5 seconds, no dice.

any other suggestions? I think I'm missing something here.

It's a viewsonic VX1935wm. The monitor is set to digital (that's dvi right?) When I turn on the ps3, the screen simply goes blank, so I can't set it hdmi through the system settings. I know that when it starts, it detects the hdmi connection. It asks me if I want to set it and I select "yes" (all without seeing what's on the screen).

Is it hdcp complaint? A quick internet seach is telling me that it isn't. That's probably your problem. There may be a work around floating around on the internet.

I see. I was suspecting that, but wasn't sure since it worked for the 360.

thanks for the help!

Since the monitor is not HDCP compliant, the only option now is a VGA converter box if you still wanted to use the PS3 on it. I use an X2VGA2 on mine and it works great. It turns the PS3's component output into VGA. I think it ran me $50 on ebay a little while back.

Funny you mention the x2vga2. I'm considering getting it since my tv just bit the dust. How well does it work, and what kind of monitor do you have to have?

It works pretty good and the games display in HD. It does require it's own power so it's another set of cords to hide. I just wish there was an official Sony VGA cable like the 360 has. As for the monitor, any widescreen will work. I've used it on a Dell 19" 4:3 and everything was squished. I then used it on a Viewsonic 19" 16:9 and a Soyo 24" 16:9 and it was great.

That's what I was worried about. I have an older NEC 4:3 CRT. I didn't know if it would letterbox it or something.

Many of the new dell models are hdmi/hdcp ready. I bought a 22" because I'm cheap.

Yeah, since there is no official Sony VGA cable, the PS3 doesn't have any knowledge of PC resolutions so it just sends out a widescreen HD signal. Some games allow you to letterbox the display manually (MLB 08: The Show) but it's a pain in the butt.
