So here's my problem:

I don't have high-speed internet access of my own, but my laptop can connect to a wireless network in the area. Is there any way I can use my laptop to help my PS3 connect to the network? I've tried to get my PS3 to connect to the network directly (wirelessly, of course), but it can't find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you have a right or permission to use this wireless network you're referring to? one can only hope.

another computer can be set up to function like a router or a gateway for other computers on the same lan, so the answer is yes. it is not that easy to set up though. i don't know if you could use ics on a windows system to do it. normally you'd use linux or a bsd system for something like that and you'd be better served by going to a linux or bsd networking forum to ask that question.

Yes, I do have permission to be on the network. It's through a friend of mine who lives in my building.

if your laptop can connect wireless to your friends access point, then it seems like your ps3 should be able to do it also. either way it's a wireless connection. solving that is by far a simpler solution than the linux router (really a bridge in this case).

but anyway you can google "linux router bridge". You'll need to be running Linux on your laptop, and you'll need two NICs on the laptop, one to serve your own local area network, one to bridge to your friends access point. But as I mentioned, this is a highly technical solution that assumes you are comfortable with linux and with networking in general.

So I've figured out that the signal is just strong enough for my laptop to connect to it, but not strong enough for my PS3 to reliably connect to it. I got my PS3 to connect for a couple hours last night, but I practically had to dangle it out the window. It was connected long enough for me to download Castlevania: SotN, MKII, and GT HD. I'd love to find a more reliable way to stay connected.

Now I'll be the first to admit that I don't know a whole lot about networking, so I could be doing something wrong, but I could not get that to work since my connection to the internet is wireless and I don't know if I can re-broadcast that signal or if I can use an ethernet cable to connect my laptop to my PS3. If it's possible to do it all wirelessly, that would be great.
