I just recently tried using my ps3 after a few months of inactivity and when I turned it on I recieved a message saying the HDD may be corrupted and it needs to check and restore the files. After several attempts and freezes I looked up how to do a reset on the system. I did the whole power cycling and getting to the safe mode menu, where I chose to format the HDD and restore the database. Thing finally booted up and I downloaded the latest software updat 4.whatever. Now when I turn it on it takes forever to boot up and when it finally does it freezes completely...I'm open to buying a new HDD for it, but can I avoid this? Anyone know any easy fixes for this?

Ya, I've been looking it up and so far all I'm seeing is things I've already tried, although some suggest trying the different options available in a different order. I'll probablyy try hooking it up to my PC and running a full format see if that works.

well the good news is its not the YLOD, cause if that was the case your console wouldn't even try to come on.. so hopefully its nothing that can't be fixed.

You need to physically remove your hard drive and replace with a new one. Your current one is failing/bad

Do you have a disk in the drive? Try taking the disk out. Something similar happened to me when my blu-ray drive failed.
