You don't need a HD TV, but it'll make it look a whole lot nicer though (using HDMI). You can still play on a standard TV. The PS3 comes with the red, white, yellow cable.
No, that's a fallacy that a surprisingly large amount of people are told for some reason. PS3 can play on a SDTV, hell it only comes with composite cables anyways out of the box.

you can use the Ps3 even on SDTV... though it's best on HDTV...
