I've completed games from the Zelda and Final Fantasy franchise so I am very familiar with RPG games and I am finally to dive in a good, challeging, exciting RPG game that will take me a long time to complete. I know Skyrim isn't out yet but which one in your opinion should I dive into 1st?

Well Zelda is not an RPG and western RPG's are very different from Japanese RPG. Those two games are very different, one is reliant solely on gameplay and the feeling of grinding. The other is about exploration of a living, breathing world. The question is simply, which one will you rather play. Keeping in mind, story is backseat in both games.

SKYRIM.

Seriously. I liked Demons Souls and I just couldn't get myself to enjoy Dark Souls. It just felt cheaper, the combat felt sloppier, the graphics were bland compared to today's standards, and it just didn't feel as much fun. Skyrim looks phenomenal and Oblivion and Fallout 3 were unbelievable masterpieces. I can't imagine how fantastic Skyrim is going to be, I think it will be truly mindblowing. I would go with Skyrim if you ask me.

Skyrim would fit the best I reckon. Pure exploration.

Skyrim for sure. As far as I know it's a bigger game, and the amount of hours you can put into it doing what you want seems unreal.

Both. If you like a challenge, go for Dark Souls, or Skyrim...wait...just buy both!! They'll keep you busy the rest of the year.

Dark Souls is the best RPG ive ever played(maybe FFVII). I beat Oblivion and had to force myself though it so i wont be getting skyrim. I dont like how all these rpgs out now are dumbed down for everyone. Dark Souls is hard and the second you lose focus, you die. Demon Souls was very good, but i am addicted to Dark Souls.

I'm probably biased as I thought Oblivion was terribly boring, but I'd recommend Dark Souls. It definitely is a great game though it's certainly not to everyone's taste; if you don't like the idea of losing maybe an hours progress to a single death then don't get Dark souls. There is, however, just so much satisfaction in taking down the most standard of enemies. It's a game that makes you fight tooth and nail for everything. If that appeals to you, go ahead you won't be disappointed. Moreover, Bethseda games never launch cleanly. It'll most likely be full of bugs that could be catastrophic. There's also the fact, I assume, that there will be a GOTY version next year for a lower price with all the additional content, and you know this will be the best version of the game.

Since I am still playing through Demon's Souls, I am going with Skyrim. I plan to get Dark Souls when the price goes down. But ryrulez has a point with waiting for GOTY on that one.

Keep in mind that while Bethesda tends to ease you in, Dark Souls will punish and punish and punish you until you get the hang of things. At the risk of stating the obvious, they are VERY different games.

I've beaten Dark Souls, and I have Skyrim pre-ordered. Dark Souls more or less amazed me, but Skyrim is still my most anticipated game of the year. Dark Souls one-ups Skyrim on challenge (though it isn't as brutal as everyone else claims, IMO. Also, I never "grinded" in Dark Souls and I beat it entirely by myself), but I still imagine Skyrim will be a more enjoyable experience overall. Get both if you can, seriously.

I have never understood the appeal of the first game dark souls came from. Why somebody wants to be annoyed like that is beyond me. So I guess go for skyrim.

Tough decision to make.., Morriwind is 2nd on my list of all time favorites being beaten only by Demons Souls. Oblivion was a good game but I didnt enjoy it nearly as much as morrowind...it just felt to dumbed down. I am absolutely loving Dark Souls and it very likely might surpass Demons Souls as my favorite. Even after that Skyrim looks incredible and the Souls games are not for everybody so I'd recommend Skyrim and pick up Demons Souls since you can get it under $20...If you like it and beat it get Dark Souls later... Skyrim and Demons Souls should last you a LONG time

The best option is to rent both games and try them yourself. They are fundamentaly different rpgs and you might not enjoy one or another. For me personally, Dark Souls is my recommendation. I will try Skyrim and I'm hopping its not as boring as my GOTY Oblivion copy. What I have seen so far, it looks like Skyrim is much, much improved. I will definitely give it a chance.

Thanks for the helpful info everyone. I think I'll shoot for Skyrim first and wait to see if the price on Dark Souls drops or Bethesda releases a GOTY edition. I'm definitely up for the challenge Dark Souls offers, but Skyrim sounds like I'll get more bang for my buck.I just have to get used to playing in 1st person perspective. How was Oblivion in 3rd person perspective?

in my opinion the elder scrolls 4 is a fantastic game apart from a few graphical issues and the infamous dupliacation glitch which i use to my advantage :D i hope that in skyrim the voice acting is improved and the huge graphical issues are fixed. skyrim should be a huge improvement and a benchmark for bethesda

I don't care for the third-person perspective in Oblivion, but from what I've seen, Skyrim should be much improved.

Generally speaking, no one plays TES games in third-person, but the creator or director or whatever of Skyrim said that the third-person experience for Skyrim should be much better than the previous games. I still think it's better to play in first-person, but you can find out for yourself at the click of a button once Skyrim drops. For the record, Dark Souls also has quite a lot of bang for your buck. It took me over 70 hours to beat it.
