I don't ever camp for machines, and I just simply reserve them. It's not that hard. I always see people waiting, and I've been invited to wait with other friends, but it's always their own fault due to lack of planning. I reserve to avoid lines, not wait in them. The idea is they hold the product, and you can relax and mosey on in to the store at a convenient time. It's also made clear that the retailer will sell it after a few days if you don't buy it, but that's not an issue for me. For those of you that got screwed by a retail pre order situation, it's not like you as a consumer have to only reserve at one store. Don't put all your eggs in one basket...or just wait to buy. It's not like the first year of ANY console is that great anyways.
The PS3 I wanted Blu-Ray badly, and I had been HD the generation prior, so I already waited for the PS3 to release to get Blu-Ray. I bought two at launch for two rooms. Money isn't an issue for me, time is. So, if people don't have a lot of money, they probably would do better to wait for any machine to go down in price. I don't have that limit, so I buy at launch to tinker.
I have my PS4 and 720 money ready and waiting. I bought previous gens launches as well from Dreamcast to Wii to GC to Xbox to 360 to PS2 to PS3 to N64 to PSOne to SNES, etc.
