Any tips for a noob before I get this game for christmas? I heard its pretty brutal and punishing and apparently you die a lot.

Edit
Start with a versatile class: like a royal, for instance, who is fairly proficiency in both physical attacks and ranged magic -- not to mention the Royal also comes with a mana regeneration ring.
Don't rush your attacks; take your time with even the easiest of foes.
If things get dicey, don't be ashamed to retreat -- and regroup.
Use your shield; it's there for a reason.
Time your strikes and pay attention to foes' attack patterns (NOTE: enemies always spawn in the exact same locations upon your stage/world re-entry) always keep an eye on your stamina -- if it depletes you can't roll, block or attack.
Don't get addicted to your perishable items -- expend them with prudence
****** If you have any technical question, like how to build your character, where you can find precious ores, how to obtain rare weapons and equipment, how to change world and character tendencies (and what they are), and so on and so forth, please refer to the DS wiki -- it'll tell you anything and everything you might ever want or need to know about the world of DS.
enjoy the game, and good luck.

If you want easy 1st walkthrough and platinum trophy in a short time
then you should watch youtube walkthrough everytime before you play a stage, and use demons' souls wiki website, you can find many goodinstruction there.
For platinum, it's a lot easier that you play with a friend, so you two can share trophy weapons, it will take much less time to collect those weapons.
Dont consume any boss souls untill you read demon's souls wiki. If everything is planned well, you should be able to platinum trophy in 20-30 hours.
1. Pick the Royal (by FAR the easiest starting class).
2. Your first order of business after the mandatory first level is to go to Shrine of Storms to pick of the Crescent Falchion. It is BY FAR the best weapon you can easily get in the early-game.
Beyond the above... just learn not to get too frustrated when you die. However many souls you lose, you can get them all back in 10 minutes doing the leveling trick at the beginning of the 4-2 stage.
By the way, to Demon's Souls vets... I keep harping on this on these boards, but... if you liked Demon's Souls, go check out King's Field (all 3 are good).
It's first-person and the combat is more monotonous, true, but other than that they are very, very like Demon's Souls. Anyone who appreciates exploration, tons of secrets, and brutal difficulty will love King's Field.
Sounds good. I'll do that. I LOVE brutal difficulty. Just look at my face. :PBy the way, to Demon's Souls vets... I keep harping on this on these boards, but... if you liked Demon's Souls, go check out King's Field (all 3 are good).

i've got KF;ancient city just 2h.ago ))is Kings Field on PS3?Mister-Mike
No, they are from the same developer (From Software), but there are 2 of them on PS1 and 1 of them on PS2. Demon's Souls is often named the "spiritual successor" to the King's Field games since they share many of the same qualities and mechanics. So you need to be able to tolerate crappy graphics... but it's worth-it.
Here's a link to (IMO) the fairest review of the PS2 King's Field: http://www.rpgfan.com/reviews/kingsfield4/Kings_Field_4.html
A few quotes that illustrate the similarity to Demon's Souls:
"Those who have played the games tend to have one of two very distinct reactions: they hate it completely, or they love it and become part of an ever-growing cult that worships the games. There's simply not much in the way of middle ground with these titles."
"King's Field isn't a game for adrenaline junkies or casual gamers. It's a difficult title that features a pace that can be best described as snail-like and is guaranteed to have you cursing at the television on numerous occasions thanks to its difficulty level (particularly in the early going).
However, to its benefit, the game is rarely cheap. Death is abundant in the Land of Disaster, particularly for those who are impatient, but it's generally fair. The game's battle system and speed consistently factor into the frequent death equation, but once the player realizes this—and begins to play accordingly—he'll be able to live longer.
The game features a bit of a learning curve—and until you learn the nuances of gameplay, this game will beat you down. I charged off into my first battle in a town area and promptly died ten or so times before finally winning."
Oh, and almost forgot, more Demon's Souls advice: keep the Thief's Ring equipped whenever possible. It makes you less detectable so you can get the drop on people, rather than being ambushed yourself. It's so effective that playing without it is like a different game.
i've got KF;ancient city just 2h.ago ))
Excellent! BTW, watch your step... if you walk straight forward from where you start, you'll die in about 5 steps due to a trap.
I love From Software, they're so evil.
1. Like what everyone else said you should choose to be a royal when you start. (Best equipment, can use magic, and you can shape them into pretty much whatever you want them to be)
2. After killing the demon at the end of the level dont consume the soul. Their souls can be made into great weapons and spells (go to the wiki to find out which).
3. Play slowly and cautiously. Shield up is the way to go.
4. If youre playing a melee character NEVER use up all your fatigue. Even if you see an opening in the enemy's attack dont simply mash on the attack button because it will leave you motionless and open for other attacks. If youre playing a magic character learn to block and dodge effectively so you can fire off your spells without getting hit.
turn up your gamma in the awfully boring dark levels that are almost pitch black :P. Seriously though, if you are doing PVP then make sure you get your character choice right. There is a demons souls wiki site that is great for all the information needed. If you are doing just SP and no PVP, it doesnt matter too much what you do.
