I feel sorry for all the less informed people who see that and go buy it, only to be left confused, frustrated, and betrayed. GS is welcome to it's own opinion, of course, but this really does illustrate why my use of the site is strictly for the forums, and the forums alone. Me and GS really don't seem to look for or value the same things in games. Oh well.thunderf00tUncharted 2 is great, but nothing unique. Demons Souls on the other hand is excellent all around, and is quite unique for what it is.
Very pleased, and my confidence in GS just skyrocketed. The deserved winner took the crown for once. raven_squadIdd.
Idd, also. Only had Demons Souls a few hours but my decision changed straight away to GOTY. Love it.Yay go Demon's Souls! my personal GOTY actually won somewhere.

[QUOTE="KHAndAnime"] Uncharted 2 is great, but nothing unique. Demons Souls on the other hand is excellent all around, and is quite unique for what it is.thunderf00tUniqueness is great, but not that important to me. I don't like blatant copy/paste games like Dante's Inferno (it didn't borrow concepts, it blatantly copied a whole established game series), but on the whole, along with innovation and originality, I consider uniqueness very low on my list of important qualities for a game. But as I've said before, it seems me and most of the gamers who talk about their hobby on the internets seem to not have a lot in common when it comes to these things. Because personally I feel that if uniqueness and "innovation" determined the GOTY, then it only validates my strict use of the forums and only the forums when it comes to this site. Just my two cents. I also think uniqueness isn't really needed - but I still believe DS should, and deserves, to win.

Just my two cents. Uniqueness and "innovation" is always considered for GOTY for every site out there, right there with gameplay - so you might want to just stick to forums from now on then. Uncharted 2 is a great game, but it's a familiar experience. If you stack up to a great game that's the same ol' stuff, versus a great game that shakes things up a little, the more unique title will win every time. It's how it has worked, it's how it will always work, and that's how it should work.
it's how it will always work, and that's how it should work.Well obviously, I don't agree with that, but you are welcome to that particular opinion if you feel that way. Funny though, that you say that every site out there is weighing uniqueness and innovation in these considerations, then say that UC2 is a "familiar experience", then I see several sites giving UC2 the nod and not even nominating Demon's Souls. Apparently, you're just plain wrong on that one. I played both Demon's Souls and UC2 to completion, and found the great game thats "more of the same old stuff" vastly superior. So apparently the more unique game does not, in fact, win every time. By the way the user voting is going on GOTY, I'm in the majority on that one too.KHAndAnime

Apparently, you're wrong. Uniqueness and innovation is always considered, but obviously so are other factors. In the sites you're talking about, they likely also value popularity and graphics over gameplay. I don't see what's so hard to understand about that. It's also possible that they consider the gameplay of Uncharted 2 to be much more than that of Demons Souls or any other game out there. But really, Uncharted 2 was a great game. It had graphics and popularity on its side. And then Demons Souls had uniqueness and innovation. If you think taking originality into consideration when determining a GOTY is ridiculous, then I'd say you're the one who's being ridiculous.[QUOTE="KHAndAnime"]it's how it will always work, and that's how it should work.

Maybe you should try avoiding my posts in the future, rather than becoming irate and trying to pick an "internet fight". Good day to you, sir.

Just for my personal curiosity, what do you value in a game?
In my opinion both AC2 and U2 were better polished games with more engaging stories, a better lasting appeal, and just more fun.
Demon Soul's is not a bad game by any respect, but does innovation necessarily make it GOTY quality? Dune II was innovative in the since that it paved thw ay for the genre we now know as RTS, but in know way does it make a good game. The GOTY should be the best overall game, one that markets itself to a very limited scope of people should not receive a nod as #1.
So what you are saying is that it would be better if GS didn't give DS GOTY even though they think it deserves it because some people might run out and buy it and be disappointed? No, that is not why I feel it should not have gotten the nod, I'm just genuinely feeling sorry for the people who hear it won GOTY, run out and buy it, and get punched in the stomach for it. Wasting sixty dollars of your Christmas money on a game that hates you is likely a bad experience. I value quality, of course, a simple demand. I also value genuine challenge, and despise frustration. As a working man, a game that kicks you in the nuts for daring to think to try to relax and have fun after work and be entertained really grinds my gears. Frankly speaking, that is exactly what Demon's Souls felt like after work, more work. Progressively so the more you play, especially getting into new game plus and beyond. I can take a challenge. DMC3 was challenging, (My 2005 GOTY) Ninja Gaiden was too, (2004 GOTY for me, though the second game was total and absolute BS) so was God Hand. (GOTY 2006) The only thing Demon's Souls challenged, however, was my patience.Just for my personal curiosity, what do you value in a game?

I personally think the game goes about providing it's "challenge" in all the wrong ways, and that what they challenge isn't something most people want challenged. (patience, rather than skill and reflex) In short, I thought it was an irritating, boring, repetitive grind fest. I never really found that sense of accomplishment people keep talking about, but to those of you who love the game and did find it I say mazel tov! Good for you, because you enjoyed one more great game this year than I did, and my gaming year is lesser for it. I think that's pretty much all I have without any further particapation in this discussion becoming rather a bit circular, so I wish you guys and gals in this thread a happy non denominational gift giving day.
Cheers.
Demon's Souls is something you'll keep coming back to. It's addictive and challenging, unlike Assassins Creed and Uncharted 2. With Demon's Souls, each playthrough is different. The game has a deep story believe it or not. You'll learn the more you play and the world tendencies will make sure you're always surprised. In my opinion both AC2 and U2 were better polished games with more engaging stories, a better lasting appeal, and just more fun.

That's pretty sweet but I don't get how Demon's Souls got GOTY but not Best New IP?
Best new IP could mean many things - best game for sequels, best story in an IP etc etc. Best New IP is VERY vague. Not really, new IP is very straight forward. A new ip means a new intellectual property. In other words no sequels, spin offs, remakes or remasters. All it has to be is a new franchise and this award is the best game among the new franchises. Its basically just like GOTY but without the Mario's, Halo's, Final Fantasy's and so on. Anyway Demon's Souls is not that innovative, its just unique for the time. Haven't played it yet but from what I hear its a great game, but its not a game for just anyone. I am surprised about it being picked GOTY though, I expected GS to just follow the usual trend and pick Uncharted 2, which personally I wouldn't pick. While I don't think a game being unique or innovative should automatically get an award, nor does it, since Scribblenauts is the most unique and innovative game this year and it didn't even win handheld GOTY. Personally my GOTY is Arkham Asylum, I found what Rockstead did far more impressive then what Naughty Dog did.No, that is not why I feel it should not have gotten the nod, I'm just genuinely feeling sorry for the people who hear it won GOTY, run out and buy it, and get punched in the stomach for it. I'm actually really enjoying the game and the challenge. Oh well, everyone's entitled to their own opinion.

You'd have prefered Uncharted 2 or MW2 ? That would have been so mainstreamly common... Thanks GS!
Have to admit, I was suprised but I can see why it won. I can't really argue with this years GOTY even if I tried
I'm happy for Demon's Souls. While I personally enjoyed Uncharted 2 a bit more it's cool to see the underdog win. I thought UC2 had the award in the bag, but DS winning was a nice surprise. I'd still have wanted Batman: AA to win if we were picking underdogs, but DS is a deserving winner and a great game. I'm sure the folks at Atlus are happy they brought it over stateside now.
