I'm so happy/surprised with this. Demon's Souls is my GOTY so I'm really glad it won. That makes 3 times GS surprised me with their awards so far this year.

Hardest game on PS3 I played so far, I am still lost in that game, but it is a great feeling once you beat 1-1 or 1-2, etc.. It is hard, but in a way, is a trial and error game. You will get good as you play more could be hard enough that i never manage to finish it, cuz that would suck....
ive had this game since it first released from japan, then traded it in for the north american deluxe edition on day 1, and put it in my backlog to play uncharted 2, crack in time, COD MW2 and Assassins Creed 2. Now I have nothing new to play other than demons souls, i cant bring myself to play it tho because im scared of not liking it.
Certainly a surprise, especially since by logic, there's a high chance it could become overall game of the year as well now. I think the only other game that could beat it now is Chinatown Wars since Dragon Age lost to Demon's Souls in RPG of the year. I'd personally pick Uncharted 2 well above Demon's Souls due to higher production values, better story, etc, but it's their choice and if this raises the chance for a second Demon's Souls, I'm all for it.

I didn't think it was that hard, the hardest part of it really is just getting over the learning curve. after you beat the first 2 bosses (worlds 1-1 and 1-2) you'll find the game much easier. although some people find it hard because they play it like a hack and slash (lol). the first time I played it took me ten hours from start to beat the 1-2 boss, mostly because I didn't realize I could level up after the 1-1 boss, so if you don't make that mistake you'll probably be fine. after that though there were only a couple bosses that gave me any grief, i beat most of them on my first attempt. so it's not that bad, although this game is more my thing than say an FPS or DMC game where I'm usually the one getting owned. my friend borrowed the game from me for a few weeks and never made it past 1-2, he didn't know he could level up after 1-1, lost all his souls, and never recovered.
Happy ps3 is dominating, but uncharted 2 :( WTF that means that demonsoul is getting GOTY.. if they give it to uncharted 2 it just wont make sense. Awwww :( i still havnt played demon sould though, so i cant really judge
I saw this thread and I said to myself this is old news...then I looked again and I saw ps3 goty!!! lol!! Im kinda surprised.. but like fifamessi said, will it get the GOTY since it beat UC2?!!

not necessarily, it depends on what they think the criteria is for game of the year. I wouldn't be upset if Uncharted 2 won, but i do hope Demon's Souls wins

except that reviews and scores are given by a single member of the GS staff and the awards are given based on the opinions of a panel of judges. also as I stated we don't really know what the criteria they are using for picking GOTY. it could very well be different criteria from the platform and genre awards.
Hypothetically speaking, how weird would it be if Uncharted 2 still pulls Game Of The Year? Even weirder, how weird would it be if Dragon Age: Origins wins GOTY even though Demon's Souls already beat it?
That would be kind of a dual upset considering UC2 got a 9.5 and DA:O got a 9.5 on PC.
Uncharted 2 was better polished, had more depth, and a better story. Despite it doing everything right and getting a higher review score it didn't actually bring anything new or innovative to the table, like Demon Soul's did with several features.
And..Demon Soul's has already won RPG of the year and PS3 GOTY. If Gamespot holds up any sense of consistency, Demon Soul's has to win overall GOTY. Not necessarily in a bad way, but again, I'm shocked.
It is a surprise I was expecting everyone to make the easy choice of Uncharted for GOTY, I guess that puts it out of the overall running. My overall GOTY is Arkham Asylum though.

completely agree... is being a long since I gave a perfect score to a game... that one deserved 10.0!!! Only thing I did not like was playing online with a friend co-op was HARD to do, but it was ment to be like that for obvious reasons... so BEST GAME for this year and it would be HARD to take that position...
I'm predicting Uncharted 2 as GOTY. I don't know, I just have a feeling. I think it will be gamespots way of saying they are both fantastic games. I'm sure the gamespot staff can write up a creative explanation of how a game can lose console GTOY but still will overall GOTY.

Bringing something new or innovative to the table should not matter even half as much as overall execution of the game, and UC2 is, for reasons you showed, the better game. The emphasis on newness and innovation, neither of which are necessary factors for a great game at all, is really a big part of why I stopped using reviews as a guideline for purchases a long time ago. Most people (on the internet anyway) tend to look for and appreciate things in games that just don't hold much importance to me.
Uncharted 2 will probably get GOTY. I guess they figure if Uncharted 2 wins the overall GOTY, it's sort of redundant to give it PS3 GOTY as well. Might as well give DS some love, and at the same time they get to be a bit edgy, since everyone else is picking Uncharted 2.
UC2 is an amazing game and so is Demon's Souls. I'm glad that DS won over UC2 though because it is a more unique game and it will encourage developers to try new things. Also if UC2 had won it wouldn't make people suddenly decide they want it. Everyone already wanted that. With Demon's Souls winning it will help to push sales slightly and it is well deserved. Great pick and congrats to Atlus I hope they keep making amazing games like this.
