How would you like to find out you wasted several hours of game time? I had to redo several hours of gameplay to be able to beat Barrett. I know I'm not the only one, because I've seen other people mention the same thing happened to them.

I slipped past most guards and got to the bottom floor of the FEMA compound pretty quickly. Once you enter the room where you encounter Zeke and get locked in a room to fight Barrett, you find out that you should have spent a lot more time picking up grenades and rocket launchers first. Barrett can kill you with about 2 bullets, and he has infinite ammo. If you're like me and you took a direct route to the target, you've got no weapons that can do much of anything to him.

Yes, if you're a great gamer, you could beat him by throwing barrels at him and shooting them, but it didn't work for me. He didn't seem to be much affected by them. And I ran out of ammo in about five seconds. There's a little ammo lying around, but not for combat rifles, so that didn't help. I was totally screwed. Also, I could tell very little difference when I reduced the difficulty level: it took five bullets to kill me instead of two.

It's terrible level design to leave gamers up a creek like this. They should have put ammo and weapons strong enough to beat Barrett in the room. Instead, you're just screwed. Of the 15 PS3 games I've played, I've very rarely hit a situation like this. It's absolutely head-exploding. Definitely NOT fun.

PS - Why is it Jensen can't use armor from defeated guards? And why do guards have infinite ammo and grenades, but when you kill them, you only find 2-6 rounds and no grenades? WTF!?

I played through the beginning part with only a pistol and a tranq gun, achieving 'ghost' in most areas. I ran to one of the corner rooms, hid behind the table, and looted the grenades and pistol ammo nearby - and scrambling back and forth when he threw grenades at me. TBH, I also got angry after 10 tries though! Wishing I had better weapons.

Sounds more like bad planning to me. Barret is incredibly busy to beat and there are grenades and mines sprinkled around the area where you have to find him.

Drop mines and throw grenades. Barrett go boom.

That is rough, man. In general I found all of the boss fights in Deus Ex to be really... not fun. Died so many times that I honestly was very close to breaking something more than once.

The boss battles in this game suck. Just saying. But there are plenty of different weapon and ammo options laying around in the areas you fight them, so there is plenty to fight with, even though they won't always be the choicest arsenal. Personally, I recommend keeping 4 frags on you at all times and saving them for the bosses. You may have to buy them or look around real good for them, but 4 frags is all you need. As soon as the battle begins you just duck behind cover and throw the first one at their feet. It will stun them, so they will stand there and let you blow the hell out of them in quick succession. Each fight can be over in seconds. It's cheap, I know. It's another reason why these boss battles are crap.

Uh, there's a weapons locker in the corner with 3 shotguns in it, not to mention shotgun cartridges all over. There's machine pistols in the other corner, and tons of grenades in both corners. So there ARE weapons, you're just apparently not looking hard enough if you can't find them. And while I agree that playing stealthy does make the bosses harder sine you probably won't be equipped with the proper weapons going in, the game does give you the tools you need. And throwing things at him makes it even easier than using weapons. I threw 3 gas canisters and 2 exploding barrels and that was enough to kill him on Normal. At the start of the fight, duck behind cover and roll to the right pillar. There's 2 gas canisters in the corner there. After throwing those he'll be stunned so run to the next corner and there's another one there, and 2 barrels on the way and after throwing all those that was was enough to do it for me.

I beat that dude in 4 tries lol.

I was primarily a stealth character at that point in the game.

EMP grenades are your friends.

YOu only shoot him after youve stuned him with the barrels and etc.

There should be an EMP grenade or mine laying around there somewhere. That will be the key to winning the fight, as it should stun him long enough for you to do some serious damage. However, if you are getting killed in 2 to 5 shots, I suggest you work on your ninja cover skills to survive longer. Game design has nothing to do with the player's inability to get innovative and survive a fight. Good luck mate, just remember all the resources are right there in that room, despite what you may think.

In fact there is enough ammo to beat him. When I was doing my Give Me Deus Ex run (hard run) I had exactly 50 bullets when I started this fight as I didn't bother pick up ammo. I kept dying a lot, I give you that. However, after picking ammo, grenades and throwing gas cylinders and fire extings. I was able to beat him. The gas cylinders right behind you when you start are extremely useful, pick them up and throw them he'll get damaged a lot and start coughing for a while letting you go pick anything up. While if you fight him using ammo alone it'll be exremely hard.

If there's one thing that Deus Ex doesn't do bad it's level design, I'll have to completely disagree with you on that one.

Barret and all the other Bosses are really easy. I was actually dissapointed in how easy they are even in Give Me Deus Ex which is the highest difficulty. I beat barret, with the pistol and a couple of explosives. If you run far away from him and hide, he will lose track of you. Matter fact, it was so easy that he killed himself by shooting the barrel by accident.

He was the only sort of hard boss, but at the same time you probably shouldn't play the game by rushing through it to quickly get to that point. Through proper exploration it is rather easy to get enough ammo, and there is quite a good amount of it to pick up during that particular boss fight. The boss fights do get easier after that, and without giving anything away I beat the third boss in about 5 seconds, and that isn't an exaggeration. Just explore the levels and you'll be able to find a lot of really helpful weapons.

LOL....swear to god, I can vouch for what MrSelf-Destruct is saying for the frag grenade things. No lie, it works. After many frustrating attempts similar to yours w/ Barrett (think I went over 2 dozen), OP, I actually got so mad I said 'eff it' and started just throwing the frag grenades at him, lol--swear to ya, it took me 3 frags (and barely any bullets) to drop his ass (and I say 3 b/c I actually aimed one good frag near him when we was standing near one of those explosive barrels). EMP grenades are good too on bosses that have augs done as well.

But you wanna know the best weapon of all: the Typhoon (maxed out). I had heard several on forums & youtube and whatnot swear by it that if made every single boss fight after Barrett (unless you choose to get it real early on) insanely breezy, especially if you max it out. And that's honestly no lie. For my battle w/ Yelena I took homegirl out w/ 2 or 3 (I accidently wasted that one when her ass ran from me to hide & recharge) back to back Typhoon hits....I just let her run close up on me & before she could strike I let it rip, lol. That fight ended in less than 5 seconds....kid you not. :P

Really? Barrett I found easy, just stay in cover and maneuver around him. I had 1 EMP and 1 Frag on me. Used the EMP, unloaded several bullets in his head, covered and got some distance, used Frag, a few more bullets and I tossed a couple explosive barrels at him. Took care of him easy.

Or throw a gas canister at him, he'll stay stunned for like a good 6 seconds, shoot him up, throw nades, he goes down pretty quick. Just stay covered and hidden from him and move when he throws grenades.

on my pacifist/foxiest of hounds/ give me dues ex difficulty run through I beat him with a shotgun i picked up three rooms prior on accident. There are also 2 emp grenades, a frag grenade, 4 machine pistols, and concussion grenades. It was hard given the fact i didn't have dermal armor and the difficulty wasn't changed. But hit him with three of the barrels then throw a emp/concussion then blast away at him while he's stunned then run when he recovers. Rinse and repeat. It took me around four tries. Inadequacy =\= Poor level design

i dunno...the room u fight him in has plenty of weapons/ammo/grenades/mines. A few sniper headshots and 1 or 2 grenades pretty much killed him... To make it MUCH easier and for the future bosses just get the augmentation to chuck those explosions around u (forgot name) that kills bosses REALLY easily

actually I had something comically funny and tragic happen when I fought Barrett. I dropped a mine on the floor during a fight to try and deal some damage to him, but during the fight it didn't trigger. So after the fight, the game spawned me in the center of the room, ON TOP OF MY LAND MINE! Yeah, every time I spawned I got blown to bits. So in short, I think the game needs a bit of polish. Still an absolutely amazing game though, and while i understand your dilemma, by that point you should have known that you need more than stealth to survive the game and you should have invested in damage reduction upgrades.

After about a dozen tries myself, I just hit him with an emp grenade, and blasted him point blank with one of the shotguns in the room. It only took about six shots after having softened him up a bit with sniper rifle shots to the head from afar.

HINT: if your enemy is wearing a space marine armor covering is whole body EXCEPT his head... aim for the head! After learning his pattern I just danced around the room from cover to cover and emptied a whole assault rifle magazine in his face while he was reloading his LMG Easy

Lol. I died the first time after dancing around and using cover. I then realized the simplest method.

Cover behind a Pillar and let him get on the other side. Simply circle the pilar and shoot. I beat him in about 20 seconds.

So you want the game to spoon feed you? Btw, there are grenades/ammo etc in the same room where you fight him. Throw gas tanks (or w/e) at him, etc. Beat him easily.

When I started reading this i thought this was about the boss fight with Namir and that the OP went to the limb clinic before hand. Cause thats what I did and that cost me a few hours due to my horrible save intervals. So make a new post when you do that and tell us which was tougher. Otherwise its true, stun gun and typhoon makes boss battles easy only gotta do it 2-3 times.

You can easily beat Barret using stealth tactics.

When the fight starts, turn around and garb the first gas barrel you see and throw at him. He will be stunned for a good 4-5 seconds, during this time just run to the other side of the room and use cover behind a pillar. When he recovers, he will lose sight of you. Simply keep sneaking from cover to cover until you come to another barrel or fire extinguisher. Throw those at him, shoot him in the head with pistol or stunt gun. It took me 4 rounds of this to beat him without taking a single hit from him.

This was on my second play throught. The first time I just use a bunch of grenades and pistol headshot.

the same thing happened to me. BUT the game saves at the elevator right before you go to see barrett. just go back and look for EMP grenades and ammo. thats what i did. then go in the back room and spam nades and bullets.

for the next bosses the Typhoon does wonders. barrett was the only boss i had to retry multiple times. and that was a whopping 2 times before i just went back through the level for more equipment. you just have to be smarter than the game.
