Two relatively similar extreme action games. Both have blood, both have high body counts, both have combos and high-speed battles. And of course, they are arguably the two most popular action series to emerge during the PS2 era. Which franchise do you prefer?
I like Dante more than Kratos, I'm a sword kinda guy,even though I like Kratos's brutality more...DMC's gameplay can't be beat,that series changed the way action games are played.
Well you can tell from my avi which I like better. Personally I find God of War to have REALLY repetitive gameplay, and can't play it for long periods of time. Many of the good things about DMC are shared by GOW, but I give Devil May Cry the edge because it is stylish, innovative, and never gets old.

you know if DMC was marketed and avertised as much as GOW it's popularity would be on par with GOW and would be given more attention. Also they have to be good games but if dmc was marketed like Halo, Gears, GTA and GOW it would be just as popular. But the bad news would be is that it might become overrated...

i've played DMC 1 and 3 as well as GoW 1 but i have to say that Kratos is way better than Dante! Dante is a character who should be cool but isn't (IMHO). Kratos doesn't try to be cool, he IS cool just the way he is. one of my favourite game characters ever!also GoW is the better choice!
Dante walking around with his own sword sticking out of his chest while flirting with a hot chick is most certianly a bad ass. If that was Kratos, he'd be dead. Kratos has defeated a god yes,but Dante has made the devil cry.

Kratos is a God, Dante is just a half demon punk. I think you're greatly mistaken, didn't you know that Mundus was the King of the Demon world? He just didn't beat 'evil puppets, fiery spiders' etc. I guess in a way it depends on your preferences -- Hell or Ficticious Greek mythology. Both series take place in different settings to be fair. But Dante is just too cool, Kratos would be eating Dante's Ebony and Ivory bullets. Dante is the king of the DMC universe, Dante has achieved far more than Kratos has, but mostly due to being three games out. He's defeated Argosax, Mundus, Vergil, Neo Angelo(Vergil who was in a more powerful state than DMC3). All Dante would have to do is turn his devil trigger on, and Kratos is done. Dante is too quick, he'd run circles around Kratos. Dante can stop time with quicksilver style, while Kratos can do it it's only limited. Dante has too much power, and if you ever beat a DMC game you'd find out Dante's weapons eclipse those of Kratos. Hell I'd take Nero over Kratos anyday-- with the Red Queen, Blue Rose, and his Devil Arm. Face it, Dante just has too much tricks! I'd disagree that Kratos would beat Dante in a fight.
I think we have to look at different things here, DMC as well as Onimusha were created with the Resident Evil formula Capcom had in mind and blend it with something else, DMC with demons and more action and Onimusha with Samurais and Sword Play, while its evident if you play Onimusha 1 and DMC 1 the Resident Evil type of influence, this influence seem to disappear in future installments of the franchises, DMC continue growing to become a action oriented game with a certain level of degree of deep combat and Onismusha grew to become a heavy technical sword fighting game....But God of War took the formula DMC was creating but ignored its survival horror roots for the action DMC wanted to implement and created a whole new type of game a more action oriented game with small amount of focus on puzzles and item search if you compare it to DMC 1 that had a CRAP load of that, so basically God of War is what Capcom wanted to implement in the DMC franchise that seem to be going well in DMC3
i think gow is a better game but if dante and kratos went head to head i think dante would kill. dante can take bullets to the head and he can walk around with giant swords sticking out of his chest arms and legs. i dont think kratos could stand up to dante.
Wow.... Am I the only person on the face of the planet who doesn't like God of War? Granted Kratos has more character, the Devil May Cry series BLOWS GOD OF WAR OUT OF THE WATER in terms of game play. You can't get by just mashing buttons, you actually have an obligation to learn some of the moves and an obligation to actually get good at something when your playing the game! Most of GoW can be beaten by just pounding on the triangle button. And I'm not even mentioning the pacing. In DMC you do do some backtracking, but in GoW, you fight the same enemy, like three times just to advance to the next screen....

everyones entitled to their own opinion but i hate it when people judge dmc when they never played it, or that its to hard for them or that they don't know how to play dmc. people who don't think or say that dmc is alot deeper then GOw (well in combat) don't know anything about dmc. lol graphics don't matter story is your own opinion, in mine i love dmc's plot and story. Gows ok but not my fav. DMC also beats GOW in presentation but GOW beats dmc in it's epicness. hehe i just hope that dmc4 is as epic as dmc1 or gow.
God of War is like the Kiddie Pool of action games while DMC was like the Wave Pool. God of war's gameplay had very little depth, extremely linear, and pretty much was ridiclously easy. Even on the hardest mode. It still would not be as hard as DMC3 was on just normal.
God of War is just a game reduced to a casual's action game. Everything is pretty much straight forward and very little difficulty. It is pretty much just a basic action game with flare in it. The Presentation is by far the best out of any PS2 game. But the game itself...Is at best a meh. It definitly has I would consider the best Level Designs and way to progress the story every, with fantastic music, great visuals, etc. As I said...The presentation is remarkable. But the gameplay at best is...Meh.Â
I've played all 3 of the Devil May Cry games, and only the first God of War, and I like DMC more so far. I like the story, characters and gameplay on DMC more than on God of War.
kratos is better than dante imo. gow2 and gow are better than dmc3 imo. graphics are really good on dmc3 and gow. dmc looks really slick, gow2 has awesome art direction and the huge back grounds. music gow wins hands down, i like gows combat more just my personal preference thats not to say dmcs combat is bad though.
Look at it this way. DMC had a bad game, Devil May Cry 2. God of War has had 2 games, and both are equally AMAZING. I'm not trying to diss DMC, for it is a great series. God of War is just on a whole other level.

 or....maybe people just like GOW better, like me. GOW games r the most fun ive ever had playin videogames, that crown used to go to halo but when i played GOW, there was no question that this is the best game ive played. but i guess everyone has their opinions.
I don't know but as one man said everyone is entitled to their opinion-- I can see both sides, but anyone that says GOW's gameplay is a lot more fun than DMC, they ought to actually play DMC, because to me DMC's gameplay requires a lot of skill and using different combos. That is one thing I hope Santa Monica Studio's fixes up in GOWIII, less button mashing. DMC's system to me is a lot superior, in terms of weapon choices, and weapon uniqueness. It's a lot slicker too. GOW button combos on-screen are great though.
