There has been some talk that all this hype will ruin Killzone just like GTA. I personally think that GTA was great and deserved the hype. Also, it did get a 10 on many sites and won some game of the year awards. I want to know people's oppinions of the GTA hype and see if the hype killed it or not. Based on those results I'll get a better idea if the hype will ruin Killzone 2, or only help more people to become aware of it and buy it.

a game will be good if it's really good, whether it was hyped or not... people's expectations are the one s that are truly affected, that why we shouldn't jump into one and have our own review of the game... keep the hype as a reference... anyway, a game wouldn't get much hype if people don't get really interested about it...

Just to point this out for people answering the question. If a game meets or didnt meet ur expectaions, but you didnt have those expectations becuase of the hype, dont answer that it met/exceeded, or that it didnt meet the hype.

It was overrrated but I still loved it. I still play it today every once in a while. I don't think it's a bad game. I'm not one of the haters. But yes, I think it was overhyped but don't think it ruined the game.

the hype certainly didnt ruin the game for me. i dont see why it gets the hate it does (and yes i've played pretty much EVERY GTA game). I certainly dont consider it the best in the series but a welcome addition to the series for sure

I was expecting a lot from the game not really because of the media hype, but more because the excitment i get from the previous gta games, I love the level of details of the game but I kinda forced myself to finish it, not a ad game just too repetitive

The big difference is that Killzone 2 is generally going to be a lower rated game overall and half of the industry probably looks at Killzone 2 like it's nothing all that special even going in to it if you pay attention to coverage and podcasts. Expect to see a noticeable amount of 7 and 8 scores (biased or not) to go along with the 9s and a few 10s (biased or not). Most of the haters and doubters expect a repeat of Killzone at this point as well.

GTA IV just didn't deliver for most of the gamers compared to what the reviews and crazy hyberbole articles were making it out to be. 97% industry average ?!?!?!? Wow

I don't think hype can ruin a game. I think some have such a strong desire for an upcoming game to be almost exactly similar to a previous title, there's some inflexibility to accepting differences which aren't necessarily bad. GTA4 is much darker than the previous games. It has more of a life-sim focus. It doesn't have the variety of mission activities that the previous games did, like racing the RC vehicles. But the previous games don't have the level of detail and intricacy that GTA4 has. You can't sit down and watch TV, surf the internet, date women you meet online, be judged on your appearance, bowl, play pool, shoot darts, get drunk, develop friendships and unlock special services that aid in the game, and there is no multiplayer on previous GTA console titles. The gunfights and fistfights in GTA4 are more intricate as well, and you can play through the game twice and make different plot choices. So it isn't that the game was overhyped. It delivered, it just didn't deliver in the way that some people wanted it to. The real issue is how far people feel a franchise is allowed to deviate or incorporate newness, which is where we see the controversy over other famous series like Final Fantasy. I like FFX-2, but others can't stand it. I love FF12, but others don't like it. In the end, the more you can embrace the differences while still recognizing quality, the more you will get out of gaming.

I dont think hype can make or break a game, if anything big pre-release hype might make me check it out on youtube, read a few reviews or source some gameplay footage to make my own decision, but let's face it; all that hype does for a game is add fuel to the hater's fire and give us all something to debate online whether we love it , hate it, or are considering buying it...

In some ways it met the hype. Others, exceeded. But even with this, it just wasn't as funf or me as Saint's Row 2 turned out to be.

I loved GTA IV.. why? because I didn't read about it.. every news article I saw come up beforehand, I intentionally passed up. The same goes for KZ2. Then everything about it feels new and fresh as you're playing the game. I made the mistake of reading into the hype of LBP, and what did it do? Oh I played for about 3 days after it released, and haven't went back since. Sure, it was fun... but i was so sick of reading/hearing about it that I lost interest. I don't want that to happen to KZ2 even though honestly I think it'll get a 8-8.5 on here.

um thats every GTA game for me. GTA games are only fun for the first few hours and then they bore me to death which is why I avoided GTA4. GTA games are good for a rent if theres nothing else and thats about it.

I'll go with the it was overhyped, but still enjoyed it option. Was an awesome game, but I think their is a tendency to overhype games now so no matter how good it is many are going to be disappointed.

Nope, GTA IV reached and even exceeded its hype, as you can see with the overall reviews for it. It's the best game this generation besides SMG.

I agree with you, Bio....

....except for the SMG comment.:P

Most of the hate seems to come from PS3 fans. Hmm, GTA being a same-day multiplat + exclusive DLC for the 360 version = interesting to say the least.

I'm willing to bet that if MGS4 was a same-day multiplat title that it wouldn't have been nearly as popular on this board. Kind of like how FFXIII is all of a sudden "crap", "no big deal" and "wasn't going to be very good anyway".

I'm not saying that everyone falls under my statement. Lots of people just didn't like it, which I can respect. All I'm saying is that, no doubt what happened in regards to GTA factored into some of the harder-core fanboys opinions on the game.

Not really, sure the game didn't live up to the hype brought by press and past performances but it was still a very good game, I had weeks of fun with it. My problem was the bit near the end with the boat, I'm not a fan of the helicopter/boat stuff they force on you sometimes and I certainly wasn't there, having to get it at right speed and angle or fail.

I freakin' love GTAIV.

It got so many good reviews because it did what it did amazingly. It was nearly flawless in its execution. So many people hate it because they were expecting a San Andreas game in terms of content.

Anyway, it was solid and Rockstar really did a great job on this one. I'm a bit sad about the DLC, but I'll live. It isn't like Microshaft bought all of the DLC, so I'm sure Rockstar's got something for the PS3 crowd, too.

hype didn't ruin gta4...brucie did. lol

gta4 was hyped, but it was still what it should have been and many enjoyed it or hated it because of that fact. kz2 on the other hand is nothing but hype. the ps3 is in need of a halo killer and every one wants that be kz2. so if kz2 isn't the best it will go down as being just a let down even if it's a decent fps with online play. i didn't expect gta4 to be as monumental as gta3, but i am expecting kz2 to be one of the ps3's saving graces. so we should not compare what the outcome will be if kz2 does not live up to it's hype compared to how gta4 did not live up to it's hype. if kz2 isn't the best it will hurt the ps3, but gta4 will just be known as #? (input your opinion here) on the gta list and nothing more.

oh yeah, i almost forgot to say that i personally enjoyed gta4. it was never "ruined" in my opinion!

Personally, hype has nothing to do with me forever deciding not to ever play it again. I find the game appaulling due to disgusting, garbage and lame graphics - cartoonish, not realistic enough graphics as well as horrible free roam, there's no dismemberments or enough gore.

I hardly every read any previews for games/movies/tv/etc... It seems to me whenever I do read a preview, it always seems to praise the game for being great, but then it could get reviewed and get mediocre reviews. Although this isn't the case for GTA IV, people still get too eager to play the game.

I swear that people look forward to games more than they enjoy playing them. 2 days after MGS IV was released, people were already looking ahead to other games.

The same thing is going on right now with Killzone 2. People are saying they'd sell their left arm for the game, but after it comes out, many people will already be looking on to something else. Enjoy the games as they come out, people.

No. Hype didn't ruin the game. GTAIV was awesome. Been thiking about starting it back up but then I got into FPS games. Now that and NHL 09 are all I currently play. But one day I am going to beat it again. The bank robbery mission that was like from the movie Heat = best mission in any game ever.
