Did I miss something or is MGS4 very average?

Okay, I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I fail to see why MGS4 is heralded as the best game ever. Let me point out a few flaws:

The install:
Okay, I can accept that installs are sometimes useful, but MGS4 takes the p*ss! It feels like nearly nothing is loaded from the disc, hence the numerous occasions where you have to install more data to the HD. They say that swapping discs is bad... but so is having to install content after every mission!

The stupid shop system:
Seriously, am I just meant to accept that mid-battle snake can purchase items from a shop? And I am meant to accept that an invisible robot is ferrying the items back and forth? Talk about dragging me kicking and screaming out of the immersion.

Low res textures:
The graphics are not bad by any extent, and the models are lovely... but given that we are doing so much HD installing, why do I have to put up with sub-par textures on walls, rocks etc? Uncharted has NO HD installs and the textures are much better.

Tiny areas:
Again, despite installing 5 gigs of data, individual areas are tiny! Been spotted by an enemy? Don't worry, just run out of the area and re-enter and those pesky guards have forgotten all about you!

Snake can't climb 3ft high ledges!
The world is horrible un-interactive. The one button does all system means you have very little control over you actions. Snake can sometimes climb ledges, other times he can't - there is no consistency!!!

The clichés:
Okay, I know this is fairly standard MGS stuff, but the story is, for the most part, a walking cliché! And what annoys me most is that Snake, out supposed war hero that has grown up on the battlefield, seems so bloody naïve! He seems to be shocked by war and killing... WHAT THE HELL>??!?!

Basically, whilst I don't think it is a bad game, I just wonder why it is so highly rated???

Too many things? If you are a fan of the Metal Gear Solid series then you LOVE this game .. if you aren't a fan of the series than seriously your opinion means nothing .. go somewhere else.

The stupid shop system : Well, we have to accept weirder stuff, its a game, devil may cry has a toad monster and a snake like monster, not everything has to seem Realistic! An invisible robot getting items for you isnt very Unrealistic

Low res textures : I honestly thought they were fine! not amazing but good enough!

Tiny areas : well , people would be put off if the same guard in act one is chasing him all the way in act 3, + its a sneaking game!

Snake cant climb 3ft high ledges : that didnt bother me at ALL, why would i want to climb on everything?

The cliche's: The story is amazing, have you even played MGS 1, 2 and 3? And just because snake is born to fight on the battlefield, doesnt deprive him of feelings, he doesnt like killing and war and how things are going!

Again i wasnt falming you, but these are my opinions, the game has an amazing story and gameplay, you either love it or hate it!

well i cant really comment this.. cause i dont even know what to tell you.. MGS4 was the best game in visuals matters i have played.. including texture.. so.. some advice.. i dunno... try playing it on a colored TV?! lol

this made me laugh.. x) you STILL dont get MGS's idea.. you think running on a drum arround a battlefield is realistic? and making soldiers look at playboy magazines.. and having snake feel soldiers intimate parts while searching? lol.. the game was supposed to be done like this.. you think you are smarter than a guy that made a 10 review'd game? well, surprise you arent.. (neither am i ofc.. Oo) if they wanted to put Drebin's truck in some spots for you to shop.. they would have done it easyly.. but they wanted the way it is.. (and i found it much better/practical) just like they made you carry arround 69 weapons ate the same time.. or you think they noticed after the game release "OMG he is carrying 69 weapons at the same time! what a mistake!" cmon.. lol

regarding the installs.. it seems you didnt notice but this game is the most advance to the day.. with much content, massive visual and sound effects and so they made the installs between levels to minimize the loading time between action.. it didnt bother me anything.. well but thats just opinion.. i'm just telling you the reason why.

1. It gets tedious but hardly makes the game average.

2. How Snake gets his weapons have no effect on gameplay. Would you prefer it if you couldn't get weapons and if you were limited, perhaps citing ID control as a reason, perhaps you could accept that? No you would fuss about how stupid that is and how should have access to weapons to cater to your own **** There's no winning with some people.

3. The textures really aren't as bad as some people make out, there are some blurry ones but rarely.

4. Tiny Areas? Act 1 and Act 2 are full of huge areas, e.g. The Confinement Facility in Act 2. The only act with small areas is Act five.

5. Snake can only climb ledges that are waist height or lower, this is how the game works and how all other MGS games work. It is not an inconsistenty. Its not as if you can climb some high ledges but cant climb others.

6. No point in arguing this one, the story appeals to some and not to others.

Sorry but I fail to see how any of your points make MGS4 an average game.

If you really let things as minor as this stuff "ruin" a game for you, you must not enjoy many games.

I must admit I have found many newer games don't hold my interest. However, Uncharted managed to and that game has flaws too. I just found the whole experienced a bit disconnected. i wasnt trying to cause offence though..

and for the record, I do not think MGS4 is terrible, I just found it interesting that so many of its flaws arent mentioned at all.

Ok I would first off say that i am a fan of metal gear period...however I did not like MGS 4, it wasn't fun..to me. The endeing sucked..to me. Having people who have been dead since the end of the second metal gear (not solid which was like the fourth MG game) come back all of the sudden sucked - how many times does Big Boss have to die before he stays dead - sorry if that is a spoiler.

What makes a game average, to me, is being unimmersive(which MGS is NOT, because I really wanted to know what would happen to characters I've known for years), unintuitive controls(again, something MGS does not have), or moments of cheapness(repetive gameplay, dying because I didn't do it exactly the way the designers want the player to do it, or cop out moves by the enemy AI).

Sorry, MGS is far from average. One of the best gaming experiences there is.

I agree also, you cant blow up cars in chapter 3 or at that apc at the end of 2 also enemy animations are poor.. And try shooting an rpg into the ground... now try it in GTA!

The graphics are not bad by any extent, and the models are lovely... but given that we are doing so much HD installing, why do I have to put up with sub-par textures on walls, rocks etc? Uncharted has NO HD installs and the textures are much better.

Tiny areas:
Again, despite installing 5 gigs of data, individual areas are tiny! Been spotted by an enemy? Don't worry, just run out of the area and re-enter and those pesky guards have forgotten all about you!

Snake can't climb 3ft high ledges!
The world is horrible un-interactive. The one button does all system means you have very little control over you actions. Snake can sometimes climb ledges, other times he can't - there is no consistency!!!

The clichés:
Okay, I know this is fairly standard MGS stuff, but the story is, for the most part, a walking cliché! And what annoys me most is that Snake, out supposed war hero that has grown up on the battlefield, seems so bloody naïve! He seems to be shocked by war and killing... WHAT THE HELL>??!?!

Basically, whilst I don't think it is a bad game, I just wonder why it is so highly rated???

i most agree with this. it actually irriates me to listen to snake talk but it has been that way since mgs2. i like the story as a whole. snake and the things he says is just one part of it that we must endure if we are to get the whole story.

You have no idea how much I do and it's sickness I think I don't know. Oh well at least I'm enjoying it. :P

MGS4 was pretty good, as far as games about a gay couple who adopt a kid, go. :-)

jk, it was decent, but definitely not one of my recent favs.
