did sony fix there upscale problem with the ps3

i want to n ow if sony fixed there problem because if i have a 720p tv that supports 1080i can i just upscale it to 1080i

Why would you want to upscale a signal to 1080i and then send it to a 720p HDTV that would have to convert it to 720p to display it???
