technically neither. i got it because there was a crackin deal going around october last year in europe. couldnt care less about blu-ray movies to be honest. sony sent me casino royale as a thank you for signing up for PSN (thanks sony :D) and really...not to sound ungreateful, but it didnt impress me really. it certainly wouldnt stop me from getting the cheaper DVD version if i was going to buy it. and yes i played it on a 37" 720P HD telly.
i got it for games though..offically speaking. i didnt want to pass up the opportunity of a 60GB model for 40GB prices and sony have team ico, one of the finest devs in the business. combine that with games like little big planet and it should proove worth it in the end.
at the mo though its mainly on folding duty (116 units now :D).
I do both equally on my PS3, watch Blu-Ray and play Games, however, I bought it mostly as a supplement to my HDTV and to work primarily as an HD movie player. The fact that it plays games was a bonus in my decision.
The results of this vote are not surprising, we're on a game site, not an HD or Movie forum. I do love my PS3 though, it was my final console purchase to go with my 360 and my Wii.
I dont own a PS3 but i will in the future.
Blu-ray and 1080p resolution is a huge plus for me. Not only Blu-ray is the future for films but for gaming as well.
One more reason to buy one is when someone wants a blu-ray player. Its the cheapest on the market with the capabilities of 1080p.So why not? For someone that wants a BR i think PS3 is still the cheapest and best there is atm for its price.
This really surprises me, the Blu-Ray DVD player was the whole reason I chose the PS3 over the 360.
I do think that if MS had put a HD DVD in the 360 then there wouldn't have been a format war, HD would have had the market all sewn up before the PS3 came out.

Actually MS couldn't have launched a year early if they had a HD-DVD drive and it would've cost as much as an early PS3. It was really Microsofts only choice strategically to not include it. The only reason X360 has any marketshare at all is because MS launched their defective console a year early, not a decision I respect them at all for.
First & foremost, I bought the PS3 for gaming purposes. The fact that it's also a Blu-ray player is just an added bonus in the veins of its Bluetooth & Wi-Fi capabilities. The PlayStation 3 is a monument to technology.Neo1O1
I'll second that. I had a blast with the last two generations of PS consoles, and I had high hopes for the PS3 and the games that were promised for it. The BD player was a deciding factor, no doubt, butnumber one on the list. More like icing on an already amazing cake.

I bought mine for the games and the future games (that interested me) I figured would be on the console (exclusives and multiplatforms).
Blu-ray and HD resolution is a big plus though.
I am about to buy a PS3, so I have done all the thinking about PS3 or 360, (I already have a Wii and it was a big mistake) and I reckon that PS3 is the sure winner. Blu-ray have won, with practically no competition from HD-DVD and Sony have won with the Playstation, no matter what the sales are. I predict that the novelty of the Wii will ware off and the tech of the 360 will - or already is - old, and that when Sony drop the prices that next tad, they've won. The blu-ray player is definantly the icing on the cake because if this really is the future of movies, you're gonna have to lose money to a player sometime...
If Microsoft hadn't have taken that risk of putting out the 360 a year early they could have included HD-DVD, they could have better technology and they could have the gaming competion in their pockets, but the took that risk and I believe it backfired. Microsoft were just stupid...
