Difference between 40GB and 80GB

Hey, I'm thinking of getting a Ps3 for Christmas. I just want to know whats the main differences between the 40GB and 80GB, is it worth the extra $100? I don't plan on playing online or any of that stuff so I don't need to worry about online stuff taking up memory. Any other info you guys could provide me with would be amazing.

Theres no memory card holders? So I can't save my games on memory cards? There for having to use the harddrive? How much memory does a Ps3 game tend to take up?Randoggy

No by memory cards I mean like SD cards. You can save games to the hardrive.

I'm not concerned about the Ps2 memory adapter. From what the other guy said it seems like the Ps3 won't have memory cards at all. What is this camera flash memory slots the 60 and 80GB have?Randoggy

Okay these are examples of SD cards. There are different types of cards like this that go in cell phones, cameras, PDAs, etc. The 80GB ps3 has readers for these cards. IE it can read pictures, videos etc that are stored on them. They do NOT store game data. The hardrive on the PS3 does that. However you can transfer pictures etc. from the cards to your hardrive and that is why it is handy to have the readers on the 80GB model.

Alright, makes more sence now. So the Ps3 is pretty much like a computer now. Game saves can be transfered onto the USB memory sticks? So I could use the USB are "memory cards" for my games? Also, how much space doesa Ps3 tend to take up on the harddrive. I'm leaning towards the 40GB right now as I'm not worried about playing Ps2 games on it but I don't want to have to upgrade my harddrive later. I don't plan on playing online either so will that save me some space?

40GB has no Memory card readers, no PS2 BC, less memory, no chrome, 2 USB slots instead of 4.Duckman5

Actually the 40GB has the exact same chrome as the 80GB. I can take a picture of mine if you like. On the box they make it look like there is no chrome but once you open it its there. Just wanted to clarify. Everything else is right on.

Anyway to summarize what others have said:

40 GB - Smaller HD, Two USB Ports, No Memory Card Reader, No Backwards Compatability, Built in Wi-Fi

80 GB - Four USB Ports, Memory Card Reader, Backwards Compatability to PS2, Built in Wi-Fi.

Spend the extra money to get the better system over all. The 80 is backward compatible for all sony games. The 40 is not PS2 compatible. If you have a library of PS2 games then this is a no brainer. FlashCharge

Why is it a no brainer when, if you have all those games, you obviously already have a ps2? If the only reason to get the 80 gig system instead of the 40 gig system is backwards compatibility then why not save yourself the extra $100 and use your old ps2 to play ps2 games? It's not like you can't switch between the two. Even if you don't have a ps2, you can buy a refurbished or used one for less than $100.

Personally, I'm not getting a ps3 until a few games come out that make it worth spending the money on. My 360 lets me play most of the games coming out that I want to play and I only spent $200 on it (bought it used off a friend). Besides, by the time the games that'll make a ps3 worth buying come out, the price may drop.

I don't think it's a good time tobuy a PS3, right now. But if I were to buy one.... I'd probably spend the extra 100 bucks for the 80gig. As for my main advice.... don't buy one, just yet.

Oh...and the 80gig is not B/C for all Sony games.... there are quite a few that don't work well on the PS3. Everything from slowdown to not working at all. Sony has a compatiblity list on their webpage....somewhere,about it.

60gig has a better B/C rating because it has the emotion chip, but because it has a chip it doesn't have the option of being updated like the software emulation of the 80gig. But as it stands currently the 60gig has better B/C support than the 80gig.
