So I just started playing demon's souls, I am in the first battling area after the tutorial. I am out of healing herbs and have no money to buy more, and I can't beat the level (without TONS of effort) without any. Is there any way for me to get more money or herbs without starting the game over or just dying a million times until I am good enough to beat the level without healing?

Kill first few soldiers, return to the archstone (and Nexus), go back to the level and repeat. Keep stacking souls and buy some herbs, then try again. But if you keep trying the level you should be able to finish it without the need of any herbs (you'll eventually memorize the level and the whole game with it).

There are some herbs laying around as well, so pick any which you haven't yet. Keep taking slow steps and check your surroundings. But yeah, just farm few souls and buy herbs to help you start. If not, then just try a new character, you can skip the tutorial after you finish it once so it shouldn't take you too long to begin again.

What class did you start with? Armor isn't necessary, but being able to roll is. Make sure you unequip enough armor so you can roll. Keep your shield up when you can, as some enemies will ambush you.

It's a really hard game even from the very begining. Just keep trying and you'll get the hang of it and by keep trying I mean you will die many many times so don't give up. You'll die less once you get the hang of it. That first section took me forever.

Make sure to start out as a Royal.

Also, here's a Wiki to help you through the game-

http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/

If you haven't played

before, you are going to have a hard time getting through this game because Demon's Souls plays exactly like PSO.

It's a Trial and Error game, keep persevering until you succeed, even if that means farming for materials or grass.

If you die a million times in the first world then just quit. The game is not for you. Seriously. I showed the game to several people who never played it before and all of them at least defeated the Phalanx without any problems. Save yourself further frustration.

I cleared the game a month ago after buying it on December of last year (Yes, I took a LONG break). Not because the game is hard, but because you have to find it's trick. I hope these tips help you in something:

-First don't become obsessed to finish the game.

-Second, take a break if you keep dying.

-Thrid, go to Demon's Souls wiki to find out your class' talent build.

-Fourth, the best weapon in my opinion is the one you get with the Wanderer (You don't need to start with a new character, just find the weapon).

-Fifth, DON'T SPEND THE SOULS YOU GET FROM THE BOSSES WITH THE WITCH, BUY EACH SPELL.

-Sixth, don't wear heavy clothes or weaponry.

-And last, forget about Dark Souls coming out next month.

*Note: there's no order, they are all helpful.

make sure you can roll quickly (remove pieces of your armor untill you can roll as fast as when you are naked), as that probably the most important skill in the game. dont trade blows with the enemies, time your attacks, dont get greedy, make sure you always have enough stamina to roll or block. this isnt a hack and slash be cautious, always have your shield raised when you're not sure what's ahead. find the short cuts for souls, just go as far through the level as you can. when you get to a part where you die a lot, just turn around, go back to the nexus, and go through the level again (many enemies will also drop grass).

the falchion? :?

the falchion isn't even the best of the curved swords

edit: however there is a crescent +1 falchion in 4-1 that makes an exellent starting weapon

I don't pay much attention to most of the weapons. I cleared the game with a Royal class using the Short Sword with some Stones wasted on it.

there should have been plenty of herbs for you to at least beat phalanx. but depending on your characters luck, it will be either harder or easier to find herbs. i beat the second boss (giant metal knight) with the mage without dieing because i had over 80 herbs.
