So I picked up a PS3 from a friend of my friends about a week ago, and on friday night I went to watch a blu ray with the lady and got about 15 minutes in and the whole thing froze.

I shut it off, restarted, and tried again and was met with error code 80029941 invalid disc error. Now this was a brand new, store bought Blu Ray, no scratches or anything. So I tried furiously for a good 15 minutes to get it to work but I would either be met with the error code or the disc would just refuse to load, or freeze during loading..

Tried again tonight, selected the scene I left off at, once again got about 10-15 minutes in with no issues then it froze, tried restarting again got to the disc menu, tried selecting where I left off last time and then it froze, after that I would either get the loading error or I couldn't get past the THX opening advert.

Seeing as the disc is loading, I'm really hoping this doesn't involve sony and it's something like over heating, or it needs to be cleaned...I am updated to the latest firmware...is that an issue?

yeah a lot of earlier/launch ps3s got the first or so batch of blu-ray laser diodes, and there were(still are but at least thyre aware of them)issues with a good percentage of them.Youll see it all the time on these and other ps3 forums(but theres always fifty others with no problems saying the posters' smokin lol.Hopefully they can improve the lasers' quality in the future.I fixed mine, but i may have to do it again down the line(hope not crosses fingers)

So the lazer needs replacing even though the disc WILL play for a good 15 minutes before crapping out on me? I'd figure it wouldn't play at all

does it take an extrra long time to load the disc(ie. wating for the bubble in the corner to disappear and the video play)?the laser fails by losing its ability to focus correctly,so the part of the disc it can 'see' changes as it deteriorates. It can probably still see the first part of the disc mainly because theres different amounts of data at the center and outer edge of the disc so more or less may be readable over a given area.(also its tempermental haha no joke just stubborn!)

Well I actually get 10 solid minutes of the movie playing when I first start it up. and I've been starting it from the point I left off from every day so it's not the blu ray...the fact that it gives me 10 minutes of movie before freezing everyday just seems weird...the second time around it will either just not load, or get to the scene selection page then not play the scene.

I have the original receipt now, it's just really roughed up, hard to make out anything on it, but it's clearly a PS3 for 399 a long with some other items.

if the warranty is still good call for the box, just remember to backup anything you can(at least saves)and remember your psn account info(just log back in and grab your games and stuff if they wipe it)

i have the same problem. my ps3 will let me play for about 10 minutes, then it'll freeze and lock up on every game. same with blu rays. but normal dvds work just fine. is that a laser problem? or what?

I have the same problem with blu-ray movies freezing and getting error code 80029941, however I can play games with no problem. Why is this?
