So Valkyria Chronicles is out now, any thoughts? Someone said Disgaea 3 was cheaper, but it just came out in August and is the same price where I shop.AlienOverlord
I was a huge fan of Final Fantasy Tactics, which is actually one of the reasons I own Disgaea 3. It feels very similar to Tactics, only the depth of gameplay and the options excel many times over. Basically, if you couldn't get enough of Tactics, Disgaea 3 is like a dream come true. The story isn't serious in any way, although I personally think it's very well done! It's comedy with fantastic voice acting, and it made me laugh continuously. The battles, on the other hand, are very serious (in terms of the AI). The computer can get downright nasty, which makes it more rewarding to win. Disgaea 3 is packed with features, like being able to level up any of your items. You'll hop inside the world of the item where your party can battle their way through progressively difficult battles, and depending on how far you make it, the item's stats will boost and become more powerful when you exit the item. This means you can level your characters, find more items, and upgrade your stuff at the same time. Just don't expect any fancy graphics. The interface is in high definition, but the rest of it has a PS1 appearance that doesn't affect the enjoyment of the game at all (for me, anyway).
If I had to choose between Disgaea and Valkyria, I would get Valkyria, however. I love that I can spend so much time playing Disgaea, but I also like to get the most for my money--that means in terms of production, the graphics, the music, and how epic the game feels. Valkyria provides much more in those departments while also having a good amount of strategic depth. There's also that intense feeling in Valkyria (due to the story and presentation) where you can really despise your enemies, making the battle more exciting and meaningful than just getting more exp for your characters. Also, your characters can die permanently in Valkyria if they get taken out and don't get medical treatment in time. It's also an extremely gorgeous game that is going to stick in your mind. Dang it! Every time I talk about Valkyria it hurts me more not to own it... I am gonna have to go buy it like tomorrow...
You can't go wrong with either one, but if I was pinching my pennies (as I actually am... not really pinching them since that would be like abusing an inanimate object) I would get Valkyria first.
