Obviously these two play very differently, but they are both stategy RPGs. They both seem like they could be a lot of fun but also could get boring if the battles are too similar or if there isn't enough strategy or ways to develop your characters. Valkyria Chronicles isn't out yet so I guess there isn't a definitive answer, but what about the people who've played Disgaea 3, did you enjoy it?

I saw Disgaea 3 at the store yesterday and wondered if I should pick it up or just wait for Valkyria, hence this thread.

I haven't played either one of those 2... (well, played VC demo), but I've played previous Disgaeas and those games are fun and with A LOT of depth. Seriously, you can spend over 300+ hrs in those games if you're willing to do everything in them. Not bad games at all. Also, the stories usually involve funny stuff, so loling is ensured.

Not saying that they are better than VC, but I can't say that VC is better than Diagaea either.

Having said that, I plan on getting both titles... not on day 1 but eventually.

well i havent played either games(except VC demo) but ive played Disgaea 2 and 1 and Disgaea 3 i think you should buy first it had almost unlimted replayability but then again you shouldnt give up on Valkyria Chronicles it has a unique art style and also a very weird gameplay engine but very fun also.

I say get disgaea 3 first and Valkyria Chronicles later

Personally, after playing the demo of VC I quickly lost interest in buying the game. I like SRPGs but this one didn't gel well with me. Disgaea 3 on the other hand is so addicting that it should be illegal, lol. With tons of character customizations and an incredible sense of longevity with the varying game modes, you can quite possibly play this game for years! Disgaea 3 for the win!!!

KapG said he thinks VC looks like Final Fantasy Tactics, although i thought it was Disgaea that looked like FF Tactics and that is the reason i had become interested in it although I had not played any of the previous Disgaea. I suppose i could buy both, Disgaea now and VC somewhere down the road...So many games I want right now, Resistance 2, Fallout 3, LBP, Dead Space, still thinking about getting Soul Caliber and I just bought NBA 2K9...

As far as stories go nothing is funnier than Disgaea. And what is really noticeable with Disgaea 3 is that it has way more audio dialogue than the previous two games. Disgaea always has everything you want from a video game; multiple endings, equipment, special ultimate attacks, hilarious moments but actually have an emotional plot, good characters, optional bosses, cameos, and prinnies. Oh, and Disgaea is cheaper.

However, VC could turn out really good too. I enjoyed the demo and I would get it if the voice acting is good (didn't sound good to me in the demo), Plot is good, and have extra stuff to do like mini-games and different costumes would be a nice touch too.

I would go with Disgaea 3 first then go to Valkyria Chronicles later. I really enjoyed the VC demo, but Disgaea 3 should keep you busy for a long while.

I am absolutely engrossed in Disgaea 3 right now, but highly anticipating Valkyria, as well.

If you like strategy, you'll probably enjoy both BUT Valkyria is something altogether different; it's not quite accurate to compare them to each other!

Visit my Valkyria Chronicles Information Topic in the GGD for more details!

I haven't really seen much of Disgaea 3 to be honest. The reason I say it reminds me of Tactics is because of the turn base moving round the map and stuff (the game obviously differs in the sense of guns vs swords and stuff). Disgaea could very well be more like Tactics, I suppose I need to check it out.

So Valkyria Chronicles is out now, any thoughts? Someone said Disgaea 3 was cheaper, but it just came out in August and is the same price where I shop.

disgaea 3... but i'm most likely one of it's biggest promoters, so you probably shouldn't listen to my overly biased suggestion ;)

FFT and disgaea differ quite a bit, but without getting into details, FFT seems slower after playing disgaea. Even if it is a turn based SRPG, it has more action and excitement per turn... lol how do you like that ratio.

VC doesnt have as much depth in terms of character creating and leveling , but on the other hand in VC the characters you can recruit have really good background stories.

Disgaea is a grinding game , you will have to do a lot of grinding trust me , in VC characters dont level up rather classes do , for example if you lvl up scouter , class every scouter you have will get stronger.

*Realises there are a LOT of differences between both games*

You better research reviews and stuff like that yourself , watch a few screens , some trailers and then decide.

My vote goes get VC first , and then get Disgaea somewhere along the road.

I was a huge fan of Final Fantasy Tactics, which is actually one of the reasons I own Disgaea 3. It feels very similar to Tactics, only the depth of gameplay and the options excel many times over. Basically, if you couldn't get enough of Tactics, Disgaea 3 is like a dream come true. The story isn't serious in any way, although I personally think it's very well done! It's comedy with fantastic voice acting, and it made me laugh continuously. The battles, on the other hand, are very serious (in terms of the AI). The computer can get downright nasty, which makes it more rewarding to win. Disgaea 3 is packed with features, like being able to level up any of your items. You'll hop inside the world of the item where your party can battle their way through progressively difficult battles, and depending on how far you make it, the item's stats will boost and become more powerful when you exit the item. This means you can level your characters, find more items, and upgrade your stuff at the same time. Just don't expect any fancy graphics. The interface is in high definition, but the rest of it has a PS1 appearance that doesn't affect the enjoyment of the game at all (for me, anyway).

If I had to choose between Disgaea and Valkyria, I would get Valkyria, however. I love that I can spend so much time playing Disgaea, but I also like to get the most for my money--that means in terms of production, the graphics, the music, and how epic the game feels. Valkyria provides much more in those departments while also having a good amount of strategic depth. There's also that intense feeling in Valkyria (due to the story and presentation) where you can really despise your enemies, making the battle more exciting and meaningful than just getting more exp for your characters. Also, your characters can die permanently in Valkyria if they get taken out and don't get medical treatment in time. It's also an extremely gorgeous game that is going to stick in your mind. Dang it! Every time I talk about Valkyria it hurts me more not to own it... I am gonna have to go buy it like tomorrow...

You can't go wrong with either one, but if I was pinching my pennies (as I actually am... not really pinching them since that would be like abusing an inanimate object) I would get Valkyria first.

VC is out now!? Oh snap, I just read some reviews and it sounds like I won't be dissapointed with this game...but I haven't even finished LBP, RB2, Disgaea 3 (completely), or even Jeanne D'ARC. I think this is like the first time in my life that I'm getting games faster than I can beat them...I'm getting scared!

Some good in depth answers. I don't feel it's so much a money constari9nt as a time constraint, even though i have lots of free time but it seems that recently I haven't been finishing my games. I haven't even hardly started MGSIV which I bought months ago :?
