Good evening all,

I recently purchased a HDMI cable and it is working fine on 1080Pin the "set-up screen" (like the screen you get when you turnyour PS3 on). However, it swops shortly to 720P after I slot a game (such as Assasin's Creed 2 andEpisodes ofLiberty City) in. I am pretty sure that both the games can run on 1080P (at least thats what it says atthe back of the box) so I was wondering what I could do to make it run on its highest setting?

Thanks in advance :)

u cant do anything. ps3 cant handle true 1080p that well. the only game i no that are true 1080 is GoW3 for sure, and umm i think ninja gadien sigma. every other game either runs in 1080i or 720p which is better than 1080i.

The game sets the resolution.

AC2 is a 720p as the game's "native" resolution (the resolution the game runs in).

The PS3 always displays games in their native resolution first.

The 1080p might be seen as having the advantage that it will also upconvert 720p signals to 1080p resolution.

The PS3 handles Blu-Rays just fine. I don't like that you're insinuating that the other console CAN when all it does is upscale the image to 1080p, something your TV is probably doing already. If you weren't implying that, I apologize.

TC, the PS3 automatically selects the best resolution output to give you the best picture quality. Upscaling 720p Native to 1080p will do nothing for the image quality other than make it blurrier. Your best bet is to let the PS3 decide what is best.

Very few games are 1080p native and the ones you list are not them. Even if it states on the box 1080p, like say COD MW2, the actual native resolution for that game is 600p (or 640p, one of them). Regardless of this, if you have a 1080p TV, then your TV will be displaying these games in 1080p upscale.

720p (1280 x 720) is not better than 1080i (1920 x 1080).

I thought 720p and 1080i were deemed to be roughly equivalent with 720p getting the slight edge because it's progressive not interlaced?

No no, I get that it has a higher resolution (the same as 1080p). Obviously 1080p is better than 720p. I've just heard of 720p vs 1080i being a bit of a trade-off. Greater resolution at the cost of an image that isn't progressive scan. That's the reason for preference I've heard anyway. I've never sat down and directly compared 720p, 1080i, and 1080p to see the differences, both subtle and great.

Ive never had trouble watching 1080i and it has always looked better than 720p.

After looking into it, most places just say that 720p is better for sports broadcasts compared to 1080i given how the image is produced. I don't really watch sports nor do I have HD channels, so I can't vouch for this.

Ive seen sport look better in 1080i. Overall, 1080i is going to be better given tis higher resolution.

1080i or 720p? i prefer 720p because its progressive scan. sure 1080i has a higher resolution but i prefer progressive scan over interlaed.

if you're asking which is better, it actually depends on what you are viewing. here's what it says on HDTV guide v2 thread

"This brings us to the question, which is better 1080i or 720p? The answer is simple, both. It all depends on what you are viewing.

If you are watching or playing an image that moves slowly then 1080i is the best for that. For example, a golf game would look much better on 1080i then 720p.

If you are watching an image that is fast paced then 720p is best for that. For example, a racing game would look much better on 720p then 1080i."

Ive never had any trouble with fast paced programmes at 1080i.
