It can't play divx files yet. They haven't released the update for it.

You will be able to do that once the update containing DivX support is released.

Just install Ubuntu Linux if you want to do that stuff. If you just want to stream video, you can also just install Tversity on your pc and it will create a media server accesible from the ps3 xmb. Any video in an incorrect format will be transcoded and play.

this link goes over the issues some people have. Remember, you can always just hold in the power button for 4 seconds when booting to get back to the XMB.

Divx will make this much easier but if you have a wireless network setup at home your ps3 can already pick up any music files and movies files (if they are correct format) along with pictures directly off of your computer as long as it is on. This just saves in the burning of items to a DVD and what not. Just FYI

If you want things simple, you can use Tversity for now. The ps3 seems to support it quite well.

You can download the .iso from Ubuntu's website. Look for Ubuntu 7.04 for ps3 (i recomend the destop version), or you can get it here as well http://linux.softpedia.com/get/System/Operating-Systems/Linux-Distributions/Ubuntu-Feisty-Fawn-20757.shtml.

"does his best Columbo impression"

one last thing, Ive come to realize that you dont actually need a memory stick if you download the desktop version. The bootloader is in the actual .iso file and the ps3 can install it from there. You might want a memory stick anyway, if only to backup game saves. Performing a quick format actually leaves your psn account untouched as well.
